MAFEX #2 Batman (The Dark Knight Rises)MAFEX #2 Batman (The Dark Knight Rises)

Man, this review is WAY overdue. I had the pictures uploaded about a week ago solely for reviewing purposes, and yet... Better late than never, no? Without further ado, here is my review of:

MAFEX #2 Batman (The Dark Knight Rises)

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371100664.jpegFront side. A bit too colorful for Batman.
Being a big fan of Bat, I can be rather picky when it comes to which Batman figures. I've always wanted the one that are not only in-scale with Figma, but also has a poseability rivals that of S.H.Figuarts. Seems like this new action figure line by Medicom Toys has finally granted my wish.

Back when this figure was announced, I have such high hopes for this figure. Being one of the figures that I'm hyping over, my expectation for this figure rose immensely after seeing bunch of reviews of MAFEX Spider-Man which have been mostly positive.

Sculpts wise, he's pretty amazing. For something at this scale, I was expecting that the sculpts to be as good as Figma. At worst, Revoltech Mattel's Movie Masters. Surprisingly, It's much better than that. Almost (keyword: Almost) as good as the 1/6 scale.

As for the paint apps, there's not much to speak of beside the head, the belt, EMP blaster, and the grapnel gun. Even then, the paint apps of what I've pointed out are truly amazing. Especially the head as it features the best sculpts and paint apps. It's almost as if they've shrunken the head of the 1/6 scale figure. It may sounds like as if I'm exaggerating. Well, that pretty much how I feel about this figure. The belt are just as awesome as well.

Now, the accessories. To be honest, I don't know if I should be happy or disappointed. While I do liking the fact that he only with just about enough, I felt like that Medicom could have give more than that. Plus, I'm not a big fan of the EMP blaster which only has a minute worth of screen-time in the movie. I'd trade the blaster for a batarang and a hand to hold it. The stand that it come with are pretty amazing as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102089.jpegBeside the fist which are a default hands, he comes with a pair of open palm, a right holding hand, EMP blaster, and grapnel gun.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102091.jpegThe stand that come with this figure. I don't normally talk about figure stands, but I'll make an exception for this one as it is rather new and unique for the MAFEX line.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102093.jpegIt feels like a mix between the Figma stand and Bandai's Tamashii Stage Act 4. I like it.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102858.jpegNow, can you tell me what's the difference between this one,
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102860.jpegand this one? Answer at the end of this review.
Articulation wise, there's a good part and bad part. The good part is that it is as decent as S.H.F. The bad part are the shoulder. This figure shares some of the unique traits from S.H.F. and yet manages to implement its own signature engineering.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102663.jpegThat's pretty much how high you can move the arm. Any higher and you'll literally pop the shoulder joint from the body. Bummer. Almost forgot to mention that the shoulder joint are somewhat similar to that of Figma.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102665.jpegKneeling like a hero he is. The head also has a great range of motion. The grapnel gun fits nicely on his hand.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102667.jpegThe stand as you've seen before has the body grip, though you don't really need it since you can just peg the stand unto Bat like Figmas.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371102669.jpegThe EMP blaster. Detailed, and fits on his hand just as good as the grapnel gun.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103054.jpegThe peg on the left side of the blaster looks really suspicious. Planning something behind our back, Medicom?
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103056.jpegFor something that appears for 1 minute, Medicom really put their hearts in this blaster.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103058.jpegThen again, the same can be said about Hot Toys as well.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103060.jpegI'm definitely gonna get a lot of craps for this. Though to be fair, I'm not the first one or the only one to brought this up and make a joke of it. Flame away now. Flame away.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103062.jpeg"Ello, Guvnuh. Where were the other drugs goin'?"
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103337.jpeg"WHERE ARE YOU?!"
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103339.jpeg"Harvey Dent. Can we trust him?"
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103341.jpeg"ANSWER ME, HOBBITSES!!"
The unique implementation that I've mention before a truly unique. take the knee joint and the elbow joint for instance. Unlike the Figuarts where they have the same, universal joint design, the one on MAFEX has a sculpts that are unique to the figure. This means that the knee pad are molded on to the joint rather than being removable like Figuarts. Just like Play Arts Kai, but better. The same applies to the elbow joint. Another unique feature on this figure which ahve also been featured on MAFEX #1 Spider-Man is the soft, squishy chest. The chest are made in such way with the inside made of normal, hard plastic to hold the joint. It does give the figure a nice, somewhat realistic look and feel to it. The trade-off is that the shoulder, which I've mentioned before pops off WAY too easily.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103343.jpegNext to DC Direct Batman and Mattel DCU Batman (AC). I was under the impression that this figure would be as tall as (if not taller than) those 2.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103345.jpegNext to S.H.F Shadow Moon and Figma Kiritsugu.
Useless fact #1: I chose Shadow Moon as comparison since that is the only Figuarts in my collection that shares the same, basic engineering as the Mafex.

Useless fact #2: Despite being a Figma and S.H.F. collector for over 3 years, I've never posed my Figma and Figuarts side by side until a week ago. Before then, I was under the impression that both Figma and Figuarts are equal in terms of height. Now..... never mind.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103712.jpeg"That's for destroying my Bat-Bunker!"
I don't want to sound too biased but to me, this figure is the definitive Batman action figure as it has almost everything that I need; great articulation, adequate accessories, and scale-consistence other action figure lines that I'm venturing into. While its one major flaws (the shoulder joint) are something that can't easily be ignored, I find it somewhat of an assurance. Yes, it's annoying whenever the arms falls off, but at the very least I won't have to worry about a potential broken joint. I guess.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Terrorhunt1371103714.jpeg

Last time I picked up this figure, it was completely sold out, except for Spidey. So, if you're looking for Bat, you may have to pay more than the original price (3800 yen), if you could find him that is. I'm hoping that Medicom would continue to make more MAFEX figures in the future as the lines has some great potential. Man of Steel or The Wolverine, maybe?

The answer isNo moreThe stand are pegged into the base at different end.

P.S.: I've made a very small update on my previous reviews. Nothing extravagant, just changing my style of scoring. Basically I replaced the scoring for "Packaging" with "Engineering". Felt like giving a score to a piece of cardboard with purpose of protecting the items that you're buying are totally pointless.

Well, I'm glad to here you liked it. I must have got a lemon, mine has the loosest joints of any figure I have ever owned. I can barely get mine standing in a vanilla pose, because one of thye leg joints will just collapse. I don't care at all about the shoulder joint popping out, in fact, I wish that was the only problem I had with this figure.

It's just a floppy, un-useable mess. :(
