Just this week a figure that I had pre-ordered was released. It's very heavy and big, so I expected big money shipping. What I was left with was 21.000 yen shipping and 20.000 yen customs. Just to note, the figure itself was a bit under 30.000 yen. This price hurt and I probably wouldn't have bought it if I could've seen this from the future.
I'm considering if I should just never order from places that don't display shipping prices before release, or if I should never pre-order a pay later item anywhere.

Anyone else experiencing this? What do you do if so?

You need to find a domestic store if that's happening.
Yeah, it was an unfortunate DHL-only situation. Nothing I could've done once I got the payment request. Customs where I live is just awful sometimes, so I see it mostly as unluck right now.

Enppu1 dag(en) geleden#113845308That is quite a lot for shipping. May I inquire as to what shipping method is this with and what the item might be?
Before I buy anything, I tend to look around if I could find the dimensions and the weight of the item(s) anywhere, so I could estimate what the shipping costs might be, if they're not specified beforehand.
I myself have thought of getting one of the more affordable Fernandes hide (X Japan)-signature guitars from Japan one day, but I'm afraid of what the shipping costs might be like.
Apex Ningguang DHL (my only option because huge)
I thought the shipping itself would be 20k+ yen, but the customs really hit me

i like to buy lots of items using proxy services and ship them via surface to australia :^) it saves heaps! but uh,,, auspost is closing surface until march next year,,, so my junk will probs just rot in neokyo’s warehouse until then unfortunately :’^))

so uh,, just try to always pick surface!! you really begin to appreciate it once it’s gone hhhh

Just the nature of the ever evolving game. Right now shipping is really bad due to inflation, covid, gas prices, lack of staff and everything... The price has gone thru the roof along with the original figures. I don't think there's anything wrong with it you may just have to be patient instead of getting the figure right away if you wanna save on shipping costs by doing surface if it's available. If not ur just SOL.

This is coming from a person who hates waiting. I've always used DHL or other premium shipping services in the past and only recently gone down to EMS to help save on shipping costs. I'm even starting to consider surface as I have a big ass order coming up and would rather not imagine the extra 200-300 if I use ems or DHL

I have some unlicensed 1/4 resins due for shipping soon and I'm absolutely dreading the shipping cost. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up costing more than the than figures themselves.
But other than that I haven't had too terrible a time with unexpected shipping costs. It's just another one of those things that bothers me about this industry as a whole, it seems to thrive on screwing over consumers as much as possible.

Because even they are unsure, there won't be many stores that will show the delivery cost when you preorder. Even then, the estimate they provide might not be precise. And even if they do let you pay for shipping in advance, you can still have to pay more when the figure is delivered if shipping costs increased or it turned out to be heavier or bigger than anticipated.

Recently, a figure was released whose shipping cost was extremely high due to the package, but nobody could have anticipated that. basketball stars

Normally if I know the box is going to be huge and will have to pay a hefty amount for shipping (or if I can't use surface shipping because it's too big) then I'll order from a site that offers free surface shipping for certain figures. I bought a 1/4 scale for $240 using TOM (which tbh it was slightly more expensive compared to AmiAmi but only by about $20 depending on the currency exchange rate at the time) and used surface shipping which I didn't have to pay for. EMS costed about $35 to ship but I was okay with waiting the 2 months using surface.

Personally, I didn't realize that there were different surface parcel size limitations (JP post has two kinds), and the USA had the smaller of the two. I originally favored AmiAmi because even if it took months, sea parcel was fairly cheap and they allowed cancellations. It was after some big single shipment items that I realized this would be an issue (interesting because some single shipment does fit). For me, I'll probably still take a chance with AmiAmi for non single shipment but will look towards AmazonJP or GoodSmileUS/Global to have the shipping guarantee.
