Odin Sphere - Mercedes - 1/8 (ALTER)Odin Sphere - Mercedes - 1/8 (ALTER)

LestterLestter8 jaar geledenReview
Fairies are one of the most illustrious creatures in the fantasy world and probably one of the most loved. Perhaps it’s their alluring essence that captivates us? Whatever it may be it’s certainly something special. From what I’ve read, Mercedes is one of three princesses from the game Odin Sphere by ATLUS who like all heroes and heroines faces the challenge of overcoming the predicament and struggle that gives her life purpose. So far Alter has graced us with three figures by this fabulously imaginative and creative artist/company. Like Gwendolyn who came before her, Mercedes is nothing but amazing. Her sculpt is one of the loveliest I’ve encountered with a paint application to match. Furthermore, her pose is not only dynamic but expresses motion frozen in time. In addition, the base is a masterpiece on its own; enhancing Mercedes overall appearance. She comes in a black matted box similar to Gwen’s. Mercedes is a figure I waited for quite some time; so much that I thought I would never receive her but now that I have her she’s truly fantastic.

Gravity and sculptors with huge imaginations are two obstacles that a company must overcome in order to keep an intact reputation and fans happy. Such challenges are what I believe fuel a company’s determination to create a world (even if tiny) that has no boundaries and limits and that is spectacular and unique all at once. Fortunately for us Alter rarely disappoints, as they produce quality figures one after the other. Having said all this, Mercedes was sculpted by Inagaki Hiroshi at a 1/8th scale; whose previous works focus mainly on gravity defying figures. However, with Alter’s talent and intelligence Mercedes is given the treatment she deserves but that will also ensure her longevity. To reiterate, Mercedes comes from a game with fabulous character designs, so it’s only expected that she look the part. Her clothing consists of a skin tight one piece with a giant pearl on her chest. The tightness accentuates her tiny waste to the point where one can appreciate her abdomen, rib cage and humble breasts. Although, I think her paned slops with leaves adorned on each side add extra volume to her buttocks and already curvy hips. Her sleeves twist around her arms and have a bagginess that drapes nicely over the tight black sleeve on her wrists, adding an elegant touch to her graceful hand gesture.

Mercedes is enigmatic with an entrancing stare expressing curiosity; that one can’t help wondering what she’s glancing at. She has a round face with a delicate profile that makes her appear as the youngest and most innocent of the three girls. If you view her from the front however, her face resembles a church owl’s face and if you view her from below she can look like an old lady. Her mouth is opened only slightly and adds a sort of amusement to her expression. She has long and big elf ears which I find to be very adorable. Her neck is completely stretched out to it’s fullest with a choker around it and her head almost touches her back. This position allows one to admire her nicely sculpted collar bone. Moreover, her head is adorned with three large flowers placed on a wreath with her braided hair swaying to the right adding movement.

Her body language exudes youth and playfulness giving her a weightless appearance with swiftness to match. Her legs and thighs are sculpted very nicely as they have a firmness to them and are fuller and rounder, which is nice to see. They also have accurate anatomical details on them; in particular her ankles. She wears white slippers reminiscent of the type they wore in Aladdin. They seem to have no soles; I imagine she must practice acrobatics as they seem perfect in enhancing her agility. Also, if one thinks about it she probably rarely walks on them; after all, she is a fairy who probably mostly flies everywhere. Speaking of flying, her wings are probably one of the highlights as they are sculpted to resemble a butterfly’s frail yet beautiful wings. They are made to resemble a glass stain window which is a very nice.

Let’s keep in mind that Mercedes is a warrior and as everyone knows a warrior must yield a weapon. Her weapon of choice is a cross bow with a wooden handle and a pink translucent sharp crystal on the very tip. This weapon fits Mercedes flawlessly as it’s swift in attack, light, beautiful and dangerous; all traits and qualities I imagine she possesses. The only flaw worth mentioning are two tiny circles on her back upper thighs. Overall the sculpt is exquisite as it’s not only lovely but gravity defying as well.

When figures are as expressive and full of personality as Mercedes; a simple paint application will not suffice. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Alter bestow upon her a treatment worthy of a princess. To begin, her skin is just right. She’s not too tanned or too pale and her cheeks have a slight blush to them. Her garment color palette is well balanced with a light lime green tint on portions of her sleeves and a darker lime green tone in the sleeves’ grooves. Towards her wrists she has black skin tight sleeves with subtle gray shading. Her pearly white slippers have a glossy finish with translucent soles; a very nice touch. The wreath over her head is sharply painted and looks very clean when viewing in close proximity. Moreover, her hair is a nice golden color; even though its shading is mainly done with what I believe to be a type of maker. However, it doesn’t look bad. The base is just as rich in color as Mercedes is. The greeneries are a variety of lush greens, some lighter than others. There are two lily pads one in vermillion and the other a red violet. Lastly, her frog companion is very nicely finished in yellow green tones for shading and bright green tints for areas meant to resemble slippery shiny amphibian skin. There are a few artifacts here and there but nothing too distracting or noticeable. As a whole it’s a solid paint job.

As most know, Mercedes is no ordinary character and what better way to demonstrate this than with a sculpt that portrays her as what she truly is; a warrior princess. Mercedes has one of the most gravity defying poses; as she’s completely off the ground! There are no pegs or ugly clear rods supporting her. It seems as if she’s swooping back with her entire body and weapon being pulled up by her delicate wings. The motion in her braids is particularly appealing and makes this pose go from cool to amazing as they denote what way she’s moving, which I believe to be back. Her body language is enchanting; however, her sexy legs and the cute bend on her left one keeps this figure from being safe or boring. She comes across as an elusive creature that almost no one has had the chance to catch a glimpse of, as she exudes a presence silent with a timid insecurity that one can only feel, rather than see. Some times sculptors tend to go over board when it comes to these complex and dynamic poses; luckily Mercedes holds up nicely with not too many awkward angles. It’s almost safe to say she looks good from all angles. One would think a pose of this nature would lead to wobbly movements but she is the sturdiest figure I have on display right now. Velvet who has both feet mounted to her base moves more, whereas Mercedes barely vibrates.

Alter constantly keeps raising the bar when is comes to creating ingenious bases that do more than just hold a figure up. Mercedes’s base is a sight to behold. It may only be a fragment of Mercedes’s habitat, yet it’s enough to immerse us in an enchanted forest world. The base is very light but has a tremendous amount of detail. For instance, it has a lovely clear material made to resemble water with lily pads over it and ripples beneath them giving the illusion of motion. There’s also some greenery surrounding the tree stump where Mercedes is attached. In addition, there’s also a frog leaping forward towards the edge, which adds a very nice touch. Despite all this attention to detail there’s a surprise within the base as it’s made to have the top removed revealing a tadpole and the tree stump’s roots inside. It’s a very sweet and ingenious addition, even if subtle. There really is no room for complaint as Alter once again wows us by demonstrating that they have no limits or obstacles.

These days boxes housing figures seem crucial, as many work to enhance a figure’s overall presentation. Mercedes’s box is simple but very nice. Like Gwendolyn’s box, Mercedes’s has all the same attributes; it has a front main window with an ALTUS sticker on the left and two on the sides and a small narrow one above. The top flap has her name on it along with “Odin Sphere” and the sculptor’s name (which in my opinion is very important). The front of the box is the same with a nice grey frame enclosing the titles within it. Furthermore, the bottom has all specifications in Japanese with the hologram sticker of authenticity towards the bottom right corner. Lastly, the sides and back of the box have photographs of Mercedes. It’s a very elegant box with nice fonts; with “Mercedes” in a striking green gradient adding contrast. Thankfully Mercedes’s box isn’t as massive as Gwen’s.

It’s quite difficult to describe with words the emotions a figure inspires in me; I can say a figure is “lovely” or “awesome” but the feeling I get in my stomach when I witness an art form as beautiful as this one is indescribable. Call me pathetic or dumb but to me this hobby (though expensive) brings out the best in me and rarely in others. Figure collecting used to be a hobby unsung by a few of my family members. However, until Mercedes’s arrival that changed instantly. I already appreciated figures but having my family see what I see is really cool. Mercedes is a sophisticated piece of art with delicate details; she’s no longer a “doll” or “piece of plastic”. Now, she’s a sculpture that comes alive in front of our very eyes! Therefore, my enjoyment for her is great but like I said, having others in my family enjoy her as well makes my enjoyment even greater. The appreciation for some figures may be ephemeral but I believe it’s safe to say I will relish Mercedes for years to come.

Thanks. It ook me a while to decide to post it. I had finished it a while back but then needed pics to go with it. Then when everything was finally ready I was a bit nervous in posting it up since I hadn't done so in a long time.

Really? You think I'm skilled? Wow, thank you for your kind words; It really means a lot to me. I finished English but I still like to write from time to time. It was always my favorite subject. Yes, I remember Miku but you don't regret it right? I just try to be as honest as possible without being biased but some times it's difficult.

Oh, so you don't get figures of characters you don't know. Luckily for me I do. If it's nice I get it.

Well... thanks for taking the time to read my review and commenting on it. It really makes it all worth it.

And again: a very great review! You're such a skilled writer, you know that? I think you could convince people to buy a figure even if they are not interested in it (remember me and Miku). That's amazing.
I wish I had this figure, but since I don't know this character I can't get her.
