Advice on Secondhand Figure-Shopping? (Surugaya)Advice on Secondhand Figure-Shopping? (Surugaya)Ask MFC

Hello again, MFC! I have another question specifically regarding Surugaya and pre-owned figures.

I decided to try out Surugaya's direct shipping as my usual proxy's been acting up a bit strange, and though I mostly got items like straps and badges, two of the items I picked up were figures, one being a pre-owned older figma!

The figure appeared just fine from the window view, but I quickly realized upon opening that the 'used' marker on the site was definitely more then thorough!

The stand was completely rusted away at the screws and I ended up scrapping the arm due to concerns, and I had to do some cleaning and retouching detail here and there on the figure itself, but it was pretty okay otherwise!

I'm fully aware that I did and could have signed up for anything when knowingly purchasing an item pre-owned and with just generic images to signify what figure it was, and I'm not upset at all as the listing was cheap and I just wanted to see what a figma was like in hand (this is now my first one!) and I enjoy the character, but I do wonder...

- Is there any way to possibly gauge the condition of pre-owned figures on Surugaya when they mostly have stock images?

- Is it possible to ask them directly for in-hand images for a fee like some proxy services do?

- Have you had an experience like this before regarding a secondhand figure from Surugaya?

littlefishgirl1 maand(en) geleden#102787222To counter those saying “only buy goods on Suruga-ya”, they have been my go-to preowned store for years now, and I’ve not had any issues with things not as described. Experiences vary, but they have been great for me. It’s too bad that some people have had issues :(
I have received a figma with a rusted stand from Amiami or Mandarake (I don’t remember which, but it was in my early collecting days). I’ve wondered if some hobby store sells screws small enough to replace those on the arm, but never looked into it.

I'm glad that you've only had good experiences with them, thank you for your view! I really do like Surugaya and have been using them for a while, so I wouldn't say I'm put off by this whole thing at all, but maybe a little more contemplate if I ever decide to pick up something like this again from them.

I assume somewhere might sell screws small enough for the stand, but I'd fear that they'd just end up breaking the plastic altogether!

Anivera1 maand(en) geleden#102775276i know this so random...but you can draw???? do you post your art work? :)
Oh, heya! I wouldn't call myself crazy good at it and I've always been real casual, but art is my primary hobby, though at the moment I'm taking a bit of a break to try new things (like figure collecting!) as I've gotten a little stuck with it! I do post elsewhere, you can find links here! Thank you for asking!

Solarstormflare1 maand(en) geleden#102767857Yeah i buy most of my collection from suruga-ya. Sometimes it's fine since they have the best prices, and once when the item was damaged and missing key parts they accepted a return which i had to pay shipping for of course, and other times the item comes damaged when it isn't a rank b? Smh. But other times rank bs come in just fine so it really is a grab bag. I try and use them for more expensive figures since I'm wary of spending over 16,000 yen on yahoo auctions. Sorry yours came in damaged

Thank you for your insight! Huh, what a mixed bag, it seems like I must have just gotten randomly unlucky, but you are really right in that Surugaya has really good prices for things I seldom see elsewhere. Aside, good to know that they take returns despite having to pay for shipping, I'll keep that in mind if something happens with a general order in the future. I also get you on the wariness regarding Yahoo Auctions and high prices, I'm still contemplating whether or not to try it out myself. Thank you again!

xMera1 maand(en) geleden#102756644Only buy Goods on surugaya. I got one nendoroid more set and 2 parts where Missing. It
was Not stated anywhere. Than i got one Trading Figure. It has scratches. I gave them one Last Chance and bought an nendoroid recently, If there is again wear and tear that are not "normal Used condition" i will never buy anything than Keychains from them again

Thank you for the advice, and I am so sorry that happened to you. I hope that any figures and sets you pick up in the future come perfectly!

Kuromii1 maand(en) geleden#102758184I'm so sorry to hear about your unfortunate purchases, and OP's too. I've bought a few figures from Suru and they've been perfectly fine... bought a lot from their store in Akiba too and had great success there.
OP, I don't have any advice, but I'm sorry you had a bad experience :(

Thank you! I think I'm just fine and I'll take this as a learning experience as I'm still pretty new to scoping things out like this! Aside, I was actually not aware they had a physical location(?), that's really neat!

tharglet1 maand(en) geleden#102760390Goods can be a bit of a crapshoot - though their help does say anything under ¥500 it's basically tough luck. I don't think they do much checking on cheapo bits.
Figures I've bought have matched the description - rank Bs had the defects listed, normal ranks were fine. I only tend to buy from the Surugaya main stock rather than makeup stock, so not sure if that makes a difference. Only bought from one of the 3rd party stores once.
I did buy one figma with rusted screws on the base, but that was disclosed in the listing. If it ever gives out, I'll scrounge around for a screw and nut to replace it.
Not sure if you can ask for photos, but I have emailed their customer support before (about subbing a new item for a used item as the new one was out of stock at the time of picking the order... but they wouldn't even though it was the same price. Sigh), and they do reply.

Thank you for your insight! It's good to know that they reply to queries as a whole as well as to possibly observe the stock type.

Snughie1 maand(en) geleden#102762592I'd say you did a great job touching him up! He looks ready to go to the soup store!

That made me smile, I haven't thought about Code Ment in a second! Thank you!

Demigod_Dan1 maand(en) geleden#102766797Seconding this

Will take this in mind! So far I've had only good experiences regarding the types of goods I've picked up, maybe figures might be a little too ambitious even if small!
