Joseph Joestar Part 2 Super Action StatueJoseph Joestar Part 2 Super Action Statue

Fixed the image sizes. Sorry about that.

Hi there! It's Portus and I'm writing my first review in a while!

I decided to review one of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Super Action Statues since they are very underrated for their quality! They seem to be the best posable figures around in quality, and while I like revoltechs, figmas, and S.H. Figuarts quite a bit, this line simply blows them all away.

FYI, there will be some spoilers, though I'll keep them under spoiler tags. I'm not here to ruin something for you.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3miq6s3Og1qd0fmro1_500.png

Anyway, this character is JOSEPH JOESTAR! He's the protagonist of part 2 of Jojo's Bizarre Advemture (Which I will now shorten to JJBA).

JJBA is a manga by Hirohiko Araki that has been ongoing since 1987 consisting of eight parts, the eighth currently serializing. It's pretty well-known for being absolutely ridiculous, and I'm sure many of you have seen at least one of the figures from this series while rummaging through online shops or even here on MFC.

Part 2 serialized from 1987 to 1989 and consists of 7 volumes. It's my personal favourite from the series, and Joseph is my favourite JoJo along with Jolyne.

Summary stolen from MAL because I can't quite summarize it well myself:

"The second JJBA series takes place in the 1930s, and follows the misadventures of Joseph Joestar, the grandson of Jonathan Joestar, as he fights vampires and ancient super beings with some help from a cybernetically-enhanced Nazi and an Italian man he has a lot in common with."

So yes, sounds a little ridiculous, huh! It's an amazing series, though. All the parts are great and in all it's a lot of fun with great battles and characters.

Joseph is a pretty hot-headed and irresponsible guy that doesn't take shit from anybody. He is 18 in part 2, and gets into crazy business and whatnot. The kind of crazy business where he crashes a plane into a volcano and befriends a robot-nazi. That kind of stuff.

BOX!!! FUN!

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5szyH8dn1rjs6peo1_500.jpg

The box is bright and kind of weak in material. It's flashy design is also apparent on other boxes from the JJBA SAS series. The colours match his scarf.

The front window easily displays the figure itself along with the majority of the accessories along with Joseph's name in large print.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5szyH8dn1rjs6peo2_500.jpg

On the back and sides are promo photos with different poses, etc.

A three piece blister is inside with precise places for the pieces. The figure along with the extra head also came carefully wrapped in plastic to protect the paint.

My only problem with this is the boxes are slightly easy to tear when opening the top flap. For a box-fan like me to rip both sides while being careful, it's a little frustrating!

BASE

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q4adzTF1rjs6peo4_500.jpg

The base's arm is rather generic, very similar to that of figmas and S.H. Figuarts. The pole that fits into Joseph's back doesn't fit the best, being too big or the hole in his back being too small. It's one or the other, because I get mixed results with my other SAS figures either fitting well or hardly fitting. I suppose it is hit or miss.

The arm is slightly stiff which is a good thing. Floppy stands are not fun and good so I'd rather a supporting stand.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q4adzTF1rjs6peo5_500.jpg

The bottom separates into three pieces, one side with a hole for the arm, another identical piece sans hole, and the centerpiece with the JJBA logo that connects the two.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q7pNYbb1rjs6peo1_500.jpg

The point of this separating is so you can display two figures at once in close proximity on a single base. It's not something I do often myself, but I can certainly see this as a pro for those seeking to save space.

THE FIGURE!!!!

Here he is in his bulky muscle-y and midriff-y glory. Ain't he fun.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q4adzTF1rjs6peo3_500.jpg

Along with the figure is a slew of accessories, including 10 hands, an alternate head, a sledgehammer, a crossbow with two interchangeable parts, and his signature American crackers.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q7pNYbb1rjs6peo5_500.jpg

The first head is rather nonchalant, staring forward.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q7pNYbb1rjs6peo4_500.jpg

The second face is angry with a striped ribbon. View spoilerHide spoilerThe ribbon in fact belongs to Joseph's friend, Caesar, who wears it across his forehead. When Caesar is killed, he used the last of his energy to send the band to Joseph in a bubble made of his own blood. (using his energy to create bubbles is his specialty. ) Joseph dons the headband in memory of his friend for the final battle. God I love these two.

The figure stays very true to his manga appearance aside from the fact he's probably half as bulky as he should be. I can see why they would take liberties on this though as his posing in the arms is already slightly limited because of how large his biceps are.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5pqvlTsB1rjs6peo2_500.jpg

Sculpting is credit to PROGRESS who is responsible for the majority of the SAS line along with a few RAHs and the line of Queen's Blade trading figures. PROGRESS primarily seems to work with Medicos Entertainment.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5sm95fMg1rjs6peo2_500.jpg

The sculpting is top notch with great clothes wrinkles and muscle definition. The face has great detail, and the hair matches the original design perfectly. Even such details as fingernails and finger wrinkles are in there. The details are implemented so that the articulation goes without trouble.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5qh1dXBq1rjs6peo7_500.jpg

The extra props also have excellent detail. The sledgehammer has a nice wooden effect while the crossbow has all the bells and whistles.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5qh1dXBq1rjs6peo9_500.jpg

The little America Crackers even have Joseph's signature J on both sides.

Overall, really rather amazing. PROGRESS' work is very consistent with attention to detail and so forth. What I'm most impressed with is the detail in the faces and hair that really capture Araki's designs.

Painting

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5sm95fMg1rjs6peo6_500.jpg

What I really love about these figures is the paintwork involved. The face decals are applied precisely and there's a great amount of shading given, such that of what you'd find in a high quality scaled figure.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q4adzTF1rjs6peo2_500.jpg

For the most part it is spot-on. There's some slight what looks like spraypaint bleeding on the stomach where it is ever so slightly blue. There are also some blue tints on several hands. Otherwise it is near perfect.

The painting on the accessories are superb, too.

POSING

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5pyr76Fi1rjs6peo3_500.jpg

Joseph is heavily jointed, with joints at the base and top of his neck, his shoulders, the top of his biceps, wrists, chest, waist, hips, feet, toes, and double-joints present in the elbows and knees.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5pyr76Fi1rjs6peo5_500.jpg

Something else I love about the SAS series is the double joints in the knees and elbows. Also included are elbow pieces and knee pieces which saves you from the travesty that is the hideous elbow gaps that are present in, say, the Guts figma.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5pyr76Fi1rjs6peo2_500.jpg
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q7pNYbb1rjs6peo3_500.jpg

This gives extra flexibility though, and along with the other joints, insane poses are possible.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5q7pNYbb1rjs6peo2_500.jpg

Joseph in particular is a very buff character, so his posibility is a lessened due to the fact his biceps are so big. His mullet also makes turning the head difficult, but I think it's still fair to say the posing is still better than those of the other action figure lines.

And there's also the certain flair that's in every single pose be boring or not that's completely fabulous, intentional or no.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5sm95fMg1rjs6peo1_500.jpg
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5sm95fMg1rjs6peo4_500.jpg

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5sm95fMg1rjs6peo7_500.jpg

With the accessories, there's a great number of poses possible.

And about the size...

Joseph is 195cm, and the scale of this figure is 1/12. That being said, he's a pretty tall dude!

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5ml9lDHZ1qd0fmro1_500.jpg

Even a little taller than Guts.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc5qamKoj31rjs6peo1_500.jpg

And certainly taller than Strength.

Enjoyment

The SAS line is always great fun, and Joseph is certainly no exception. He was my first step into it (along with Caesar, since I bought them together).

If you're a fan of JJBA, these are a great way to go. They're masterfully made and are very faithful to the series at a rather decent price.

If you're not a fan, these are still great posable figures that have great flair and design.

FABULOUS 10000%

excuse the pictures for blurs or anything. I'm using my phone's camera and I don't have the steadiest hand.

K-Mu (6 jaar geleden) #1190388I love JJBA, my favourite part is Part III, with Jotaro and Dio, my two favourite characters.^^ I started my SAS collection some years ago because I saw how awesome they were and I don't regret it! The only bad part is that I can't find them all!

I ordered this figure some weeks ago and I'm currently still awaiting to receive it, I can't wait! He looks very good, and I love the fact they even did the weapons of the chariot racing. There are only few problems with this figure in my opinion: He doesn't have the same scale as the previous JJBA SAS, He even looks like a giant when he's near previous figures. The other thing is I'm afraid he's gonna have paint issues like Kars at some point...:(

Some days ago, I saw an unopened Caesar on mandarake for 3000 Yens...But I couldn't snag it in time! Oh gawd...

Great review!

I only have some of the more recent SAS' to compare to, but I did notice Joseph seemed strangely huge compared to Yoshikage who was released only 4 months earlier than Joseph.

But Joseph seems to be one of the tallest characters in series (and also one of the more muscled ones since Araki's style slims down...) tied with Jotaro and Dio, Wham being a little taller.

And Caesar is also a really great SAS! Especially if you've got the duo together.

Thanks : )

charle (6 jaar geleden) #1189741I love jojo!! I not into jointed figures, but I'm really liking Joseph. I like how they incorporate wrinkles to the joints to make it more seamless looking than figma. My god his poses are fabulous!
May I ask you where you got the first pic fanart? Or who the artist is at least. I really like it!

No matter how you pose Joseph he can't be anything but fabulous!

And I'm the artist! : )
