[REVIEW] Max Factory Rurouni Kenshin - Himura Kenshin -[REVIEW] Max Factory Rurouni Kenshin - Himura Kenshin -

agentmozellagentmozell7 maand(en) geledenReview
FULL DISCLAIMER: The stickers I use are a part of the Necoco sticker series by Solalis on Line, I did not draw these.

It's been a while MFC! I'm back with another review. I knew I wanted to review this figure since I hit "Place Order" and I'm so happy to finally be able to sit down and do it! This figure came at the right time as well as I'm currently transitioning jobs and got the next four days off by sheer luck!

https://stickershop.line-scdn.net/stickershop/v1/product/1198918/LINEStorePC/main.png

I did post this on my Insta story a couple days ago, so if you saw that then you knew this was coming...and you know a spoiler for the review.

Now for the review before I say anything else!

FIGURE :: Rurouni Kenshin - Himura Kenshin 1/7 Scale

When this figure was first announced I was super hyped! Rurouni Kenshin was one of the first series I remember watching and reading! This def holds a special place in my heart and I've been casually rewatching the series on Netflix from time to time. I really wanted some of the older figures, but I was either not in a good place to buy them or I just found them way to expensive. I'm really glad I held out in the end! I do hope that we get to see other characters given the figure treatment. ♥

When preorders went up I noticed that there was a special bonus that I wanted and since I was planning to order a few other items I went ahead and ordered everything at once through GoodSmile direct and took full advantage on "free shipping." I say "free" because GSC will only charge shipping once, and that's along with the first items released in an order. Any items in the same order afterwards get shipped for no extra charge! Therefore I only paid 147.99 USD for Kenshin. I consider that a steal!

https://i.pinimg.com/236x/9a/27/22/9a27221673f33b77560f283fd6a78ac6--cat-ears-rabbit.jpg

Originally he was slated for May 2019 and since my birthday is May 26th I figured this would be my birthday gift to myself. But...then he was delayed until 7/2019 and I was very sad about that. GSC and their sub companies have been having way to many delays and since everything was delayed to July 2019 and released all in the last two weeks of July 2019 it really messed me up financially (since again, I'm in the middle of changing jobs and my old job decided to f*ck with my hours). I'm honestly still recovering haha...

But! That said I was very happy he wasn't delayed again, but, spoilers, I think he should've had one more delay. I'll get into it below.

But first..!

BOX :: 10/10

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270873.jpeg

Yes, yes I know. Going over the box is a bit boring. But I must show it off for science!

I mentioned earlier that I ordered from GSC direct, as such I got the purchase bonus which was a poster illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki himself!! I'll be showing off the poster in a moment. But first let's take a look at this awesome box.

I really have to admit that I got my cherry blossom backdrop months before this figure. I just knew I had to use this for Kenshin because of the base. I really love that the box is decorated with cherry blossoms and I love that it gives off the same feel that the mangas do. Every part of the box really reminds me of picking up the manga to read. On top of that the box is very sturdy! I also think its just the right size for the figure.

BLISTER

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270881.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270882.jpeg

I must admit that I was a bit surprised to see his pony tail detached. I expected it with the base and sword, but not the pony tail. I guess they really wanted to make sure it was safe in transit.

He doesn't come with any instructions, but for the most part assembly was straight forward.

Overall, I like the box. I don't display figures in their boxes, but if I did this would be a cool one to display in the box.

BONUS

I honestly don't remember if I've reviewed a figure with a shop bonus before and I'm going to be lazy and not look at my old reviews.

As mentioned the bonus for Kenshin was a B3 poster illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the author of the series.

The bonus came in a small a sturdy box.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270873.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270874.jpeg

I was confused when I initially tried to open it. Instead of opening like a normal box it opens like a cardboard chest. I probably didn't explain that very well and I really don't care. haha

I do recall when I had ordered ITEM #163750 the bonus poster wasn't really protected. Like, it was in a cardboard tube, but the tube was very flimsy and I remember a lot of people got theirs damaged. I was thankfully not one of those people. I guess they learned because this is actually pretty sturdy and would protect the poster from getting crushed.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270875.jpeg

And bam!

Its in a very similar scheme as the box and even has his autograph! The poster measures 20 x 14 inches and I def plan of framing it. ♥ I'll upload a photo when I am able to do so!

For now I have it tucked away in its box and safe from harm. Even my mom thought this was a pretty cool bonus.

BASE :: 7/10

Update at bottom of section

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270921.jpeg

I'm not going to spend a lot of time expressing how awesome I think the base is as we all saw it when the figure went up for order (one of the few times we see the base before release). I love the color scheme and I love that it's square (why, I don't know).

But what I HATE is how it attracts fingerprints like nobody's business. This one will be a pain to keep clear of prints and I wish it had a plastic cover on top. Maybe white ones attract the same amount but we don't see it? I don't know.

But, can you guys see something that is missing? I'll post the photo again so you can have another look.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270921.jpeg

Do you see it? No?

Well...that's the point.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270923.jpeg

Here's a photo of Kenshin's feet. We see the left leg has a hole for the peg in the back and we see that the right foot also has a hole for another peg but...wait...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270884.jpeg

The base I have only has ONE peg!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270922.jpeg

That's right! My base has a very small mark for where the peg SHOULD be, but it is very clearly not there. As a result Kenshin's right foot awkwardly hovers a few centimeters above the base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270885.jpeg

https://sdl-stickershop.line.naver.jp/products/0/0/1/1198918/android/stickers/8083326.png

So here's where I'm going to go on a small rant about delays.

Kenshin was delayed by two months, and I quite honestly thought he was going to be delayed again when there wasn't any news for a majority of July. But he was released and I was happy. Because a delay means that there shouldn't be any major defects like this in a figure. After all, that's why delays happen. They're so a company can ensure the quality of the product that the customer is buying. Defects like this really just annoy the customer and make us wonder why there was a delay at all.

Of course I sent an email to GSC and I have plenty more photos if they ask for them. Hopefully I'll get a new base because this is unacceptable.

I will be updating (either here or a separate blog) on what happens next. I'm not sure how many others this affected, but I'm hoping not many and that I was just unlucky.

My other thoughts aside from that is that it is a bit big. I'm actually going to spend a day reorganizing my figures to fit him in somewhere.

Overall, I really do like the base. I like the simplicity of it. But it is disappointing to see such a defect right off the bat.

BASE UPDATE 08/06/19

I emailed GSC 08/2/19 about the defect, they replied 8/5 asking for pictures and where I ordered. A day later 8/6 they emailed me this:

View spoilerHide spoiler"Dear Customer,

Thank you for your continued support of Good Smile Company.

We checked our stocks and all products have same structure.

Therefore, that is not defect.

But if there is anything else we can do for you, please let us know.
Thank you for your understanding.

Regards,
Good Smile Company Customer Support"

Well this is very unfortunate. After a two month delay everyone gets a missing peg that is clearly supposed to be there and we get told its normal because off of the products have it. Guess I'll have to find some way to support the hovering so the peg on his other foot doesn't take too much abuse.

PAINT JOB :: 8/10

SCULPT & POSE :: 17/20

Well so far we've had two goods and a bad. Let's see the rest!

First, lets look at the blister again.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270882.jpeg

So we can see Kenshin comes with the following:

♠ Kenshin
♠ Hair Piece
♠ Sword
♠ Scabbard
♠ Base

While taking Kenshin out I noticed that he had plastic wrapping around his waist. I struggled removing the bits caught under, what I assumed, his sash when I realized this:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270883.jpeg

You can detach his torso from his waist. Since there aren't any instructions I'm uncertain if this was intended or not. But it made removing the plastic easier and I was able to reattach with no issues.

If this wasn't intended then all I have to say is that this is a defect I don't mind. haha

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270889.jpeg

I forgot to take a photo, but the hair piece is attached via a peg, the hole is at the base of his head. And yes, that is a paint defect you see. I'll get to that in a moment. For now, let's see what we have.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270887.jpeg

So far so good!

https://sdl-stickershop.line.naver.jp/products/0/0/1/1292442/android/stickers/11844741.png

His sword and scabbard slid very easily....very easily into his hands and voila!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270890.jpeg

Here he is in all his glory!

Right away I can say that displaying him to see his face will be a little bit of a challenge. I didn't think about it at the time of order, but his pose will make it difficult to place him to where you can really see him. Even taking pictures I had to angle my phone awkwardly to get his face.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270891.jpeg

Speaking of, let's zoom in.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270892.jpeg

I adore his expression. He's battle ready and focused. It shows the samurai he once was in full glory! Not the goofy man that he acts to be. ♥ To me so far everything is very nice. The paint is very smooth and I really like the flow of his cloths and hair. In fact, let's just take a moment to look at him from all kinds of angles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270896.jpeg

Let's just appreciate that they actually sculpted his yukata off his body instead of "glued" to his chest. I noticed a lot of male figures do that. Whereas female figures will have clothes flowing off their body, the males don't really get that a lot. But maybe I'm just not getting the right ones. haha

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270897.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270895.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270894.jpeg

I really love how everything is done in a way that you can see him moving. It really is just like he dodged an attack and is coming back full force to counter.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270898.jpeg

Now remember earlier when I emphasized the sword and scabbard really just slid into his hand?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270900.jpeg

I feel like the hand was done a bit too open. It reminds me of my Yato figure right now. He can't hold onto one of his blades, but he is also an older figure and has been holding it since he arrived to me on release. So that makes sense. Kenshin being brand spanking new shouldn't have this issue. I feel like Max Factory maybe wanted to make it easy to assemble (for once) but they did it in a way that the sword will fall out if jostled too much. In fact, it fell three times while getting photos just by moving the base around.

I also realized I forgot to photograph it, but the sword is very true to art! The paint isn't sloppy at all and thank god it doesn't bleed anywhere.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270901.jpeg

Here's the only picture I have, I'm so sorry that I failed to get photos.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/eb/82/45/eb8245d464ce1b4333bcb9c00eed0132.png

Back to clothes!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270902.jpeg

Or not because I'm distracted by the hair defect again.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270902.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270903.jpeg

And I also found another one too.

Again, if a figure is going to be delayed then there's no reason for defects to exist. Thankfully these were the only paint defects I found. The big one is still the base. A medium one is his hand not gripping the sword well enough. And these two are small because you wouldn't see them anyway when displayed.

Just very annoying.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270906.jpeg

I will admit, to me the shading does look weird here. I feel like the red was done too dark. But it may just be the contract to the other shades used for his clothes.

I feel like Max Factory should've done a lighter red. I seem to recall Kenshin's yukata being a lot lighter.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270875.jpeg

Especially when I compare it to the poster.

But on that same note, I really do this its just the shading was too harsh for this figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270910.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270911.jpeg

He does hold his scabbard better than the sword, but I still found it a bit looser than it should be. I do like the detailing on it and thankfully no bleeding.

His hand does look like it was sculpted strangely.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270912.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270913.jpeg

I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I do understand hands are hard, but I guess this was one of the smaller things not many people noticed in the prototype stage.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270907.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270908.jpeg

(ugh! That hovering!)

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270909.jpeg

I think the end of his pants too look hilarious when viewed at certain angles. Like a freaking parachute. But at other angles its like, the flow of battle movement.

Now let's look at the hair some more.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270915.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270916.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270917.jpeg

No seamlines! I think this is the first figure where I can't see a seam line. Or if its there it really just goes with the detailing of his hair. Which is good since his pose would show that more than others.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270918.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270919.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270920.jpeg

I really love the sculpt of this. I just think it looks really pleasing. ♥

Well, I think that's everything.

Overall, I am absolutely in love. I really do like this figure and despite the small flaws I pointed out I really do love him! I think he was a great purchase.

COuld he have been done better? Of course. Any figure can be done better. But Aside from the base, I'm personally happy with the result and I don't feel like I was cheated out of 147.99 USD. I feel like he was worth the price 100%.

I have seen comments about the shipping being high, so if you can find him on sale then I think you should nab him! He's awesome for any fan of the series.

Again I do want to say that I will be updating on what GSC says in regards to the base. If you want me to make a separate blog than let me know! Otherwise I may just update here as an "edit" or make a story on my Instagram.

Well, that's all for now! Until next time!

layla-weston90 (7 maand(en) geleden) #65056655It's a shame about the peg issue, I would be really bothered by the hoovering foot!
The paint defects on the hair wouldn't really bother me that much, it would bother me if there were more paint defects but I can totally tolerate 2!
Do you think that he's worth what you paid for?
I am interested in picking this Kenshin up at some point as I loved the manga alot!! Himura always made me laugh by being dopey at times XXDD

I think so! Even with the "all around defect" of the peg I really don't regret preordering him. He looks great in my collection (especially paired with Lavi!!) and he's stunning.

I do say that if you can find him on sale somewhere (since shipping quotes are higher) then go for it to save cash. If you think he won't go down any time soon and risks going up then buy him now while stores have him for market price.
