sailormatlacUta Kata & Popotan... Oh boy! let's talk about underrated and forgotten animes! Popotan was that anime I downloaded in my youth thinking it would be pure trash and fan service... only to be proven absolutely wrong by the following episodes. I was genuinely surprised by the way they handled a simple yet touching story. I still recommend the title in anime conventions when I do panels about forgotten series.
Glad to be one of the few to know both shows. Probably Uta-Kata is a little bit dated nowadays, but I suspect Popotan "the heart in the right place" vibe still works. One of my friend is a big fan of Uta-Kata and almost swear by it even to this day. He had more than one fight with Madoka fans!

If you can ignore the sometimes excessive fanservice (which was almost certainly there to draw in the fans of the VN that spawned the show), Popotan is really a very sad and heart-tugging show. The idea that existing outside of time is not all fun and games and that there are consequences to popping in and out of other peoples' lives makes for a much deeper and more interesting show than one might expect just at a glance. The fact that Poyoyon Rock did the attractive character designs makes the show even better.

When I found the Uta Kata CD, I revisited the episodes, and the show is somewhat dated, mainly because it was obviously done on a tight budget and the animation is somewhat limited. Madoka is a much better show in pretty much every respect (the animation is certainly better and the raison d'etre for the goings-on and the characters' motivations is better developed in Madoka) but all the same Uta Kata is an interesting show in its own right.

Probably the reason that Uta Kata was never too popular is that people who liked the dark overtones of the show might have been put off by the girly aspects of the show (like the Card Captor Sakura-esque "costume of the week" gimmick, which is actually rather interesting) and people who were looking for a fluffy magical girl anime might have turned away by the increasingly bleak tone of the show, and the rather nihilistic ending.

One of my friend is a big fan of Uta-Kata and almost swear by it even to this day. He had more than one fight with Madoka fans! Anyway, speaking of dark mahou shoujo, I recently watched Mahou no Mako-chan (1970) and discovered how dark that show was, even by today's standards. Inhibited hippies, provocative sexual innuendo, underage teens flirting in bars, black civil rights, youth suicide, delinquents, death, more death, animal death, more animal death, water lead poisoning, pollution, corruption, magic "that can't do nothing" against the ills of society, Vietnam war, student rebellions, anti-conformism and bullying. Feels like a crossover between Oniisama e, a modern dark mahou shoujo and a edgy late-90s early 2000s anime. Great stuff for the era given the technical limitations and episodic plotline. If this anime was redone with a continuous plot line and better production values, it would be an instant classic.

That's what I like about revisiting animes from the late 60s and early 70s. They are unsophisticated in appearance (thought many show some genuine artistic sensibilities), but so bold in themes and characters. It really changes one's viewpoint and makes me admire creators and TV executives that had the guts to go forward against PTAs and censorship. The funny thing is I can guarantee you I was less than impressed when I went back to watch current animes from this season.. it all felt washed out, bland and lifeless! ;-)

Anyway, Mako is the epitome of 60s cuteness, she's to die for. It would be so great to see a line of PVC figures based on old school Toei majokko. Mako-chan and Megu-chan would be terrific! (CM did a Megu-chan many years ago, but I'm not a fan of posable figures ITEM #41751) The funny thing is they could make castoff version of them and it would be PERFECTLY in character!

FenebrysExactly what I experienced after seeing some pictures of her here on MFC. She's even the reason why I started Akeiro Kaikitan, tbh. Luckily I still found her somewhere. But I'm already scared about casting her off ^^'
    Nice loot btw!

Casting off the figure is not too difficult, it's just that a high level of care is needed. The bikini parts are a little bit stretchy, but I was careful not to force the matter too much.

I found the easiest way to cast off her top was to remove her head, move the top up her body, get the neck strap around the peg attaching her head, and then slip the bikini gently down her torso. Slow and steady...

victorviperI almost missed out on Velvet, since I went back and forth about preordering. By the time I made up my mind, she had pre-sold out on AmiAmi.

damedanbo (1 maand(en) geleden) #53890461Sooooo jealous of that Q-six Velvet! I didn't notice she existed until she was sold out everywhere.
Fortunately she's still available on kujumi.de. Didn't know about this shop until my desperate search for Velvet myself. So I've got no real experience with them yet. It seems, like it will take a while until she's shipped, but they seem to be pretty trustworthy :)
The shop's all in german and shipping overseas won't come cheap, though :/

Love that first castoff figure as well; her (as you said, kinda garish!) color scheme is really eye catching, and I love her pose and setup.
    Thanks for sharing!

Velvet is a very neat figure. The way her hair hangs in her face is a very neat look, and of course the maid/microkini combination is an interesting one. I guess that Q-Six, as a smaller company, must be pretty tight with their production runs, as you don't often see their figures new post-release.

A fair number of people on MFC appear to have ordered Velvet, so maybe she won't be too tough to find on the secondhand market.
