February Loot-Catgirls and Maids and Asuka, Oh My!February Loot-Catgirls and Maids and Asuka, Oh My!

victorvipervictorviper1 maand(en) geledenLoot
February's loot contains a little bit of everything - a figure of one of my very favorite characters, a couple of long overdue items from my wishlist, a figure I was afraid that I had missed out on, and some assorted old media items. Sounds interesting, right?

Some of this month's items also have some NSFW features, and a couple of spoilered shots below could be considered 18+, so you've been warned...

Collecting a package from Native, some assorted random media items, and an AmiAmi box, we've got the following loot pile.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551820534.jpeg

Wave #1: (Native)

First up is a Native figure that caught my eye for all sorts of reasons, Natsumi ITEM #464782.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551063335.jpeg

The stark white design of the box reminds me of the packaging used by a certain unnamed trendy phone/computer manufacturer :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551063340.jpeg

I like figure photography, and Natsumi caught my attention because of the selfie photography theme and all the props that are included with the figure. This is also one of these figures where it's interesting to try to wind a narrative around what exactly the character is doing.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551063353.jpeg

I also like the rather garish color scheme of the figure. The blue and white on her seifuku outfit plus the red lingerie and stockings plus the gold bikini means there is a lot going on color-wise, but it all somehow comes together!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551063356.jpeg

Wave #2: (Media Items)

Next up is some small media items cobbled together during the last month.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551820530.jpeg

First up is a CD ITEM #64185 of the opening and closing themes from the Uta Kata ENTRY #600 anime. If you're not familiar with the show, it's not a masterpiece by any means, but Uta Kata was certainly ahead of its time. At its core, it is a mahou shoujo anime with some really dark undertones, which was not quite commonplace in the early 2000's (well before shows like the better-known Madoka Magica came along!). The ending theme always stuck with me because each episode featured an endcard drawn by a different artist, thereby encouraging the viewer to stick around for the credits.

The other CD ITEM #50875 is the opening and closing themes from an anime that ended up being a whole lot better than it should have been, Popotan ENTRY #1019. The opening features the one and only Haruko Momoi, and the ending theme S.U.K.I. has always stuck with me for some reason, so when I found this CD at a good price, I snatched it up.

The other items are the US release of the first volume of the Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card anime and a Blu-Ray disk of one of the 2018 Magical Mirai concerts ITEM #758334.

Wave #3: (AmiAmi)

The third wave of loot for this month is the usual monthly haul from AmiAmi, featuring a number of figures and an acrylic keychain of Rin Kagamine ITEM #737180.

AmiAmi's February postcard is slightly meta, with Amico gazing at a figure of herself.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551820532.jpeg

I buy mostly figures of favorite characters as well as original characters, but it's not too often that I buy a figure of a non-original character where I don't know much about their origin. However, if the figure checks enough moe boxes, I will make exceptions, and the first item from AmiAmi is such a thing, Q-Six's Velvet ITEM #604880 from the Akeiro Kaikitan ENTRY #114545 visual novel.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551986001.jpeg

The maid theme paired with the micro-bikini caught my attention when this figure was teased, and Q-Six did a really good job with the sculpting of her slender body and her skin tone!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551985995.jpeg

I almost missed out on Velvet, since I went back and forth about preordering. By the time I made up my mind, she had pre-sold out on AmiAmi. This was the third time this happened to me with a Q-Six figure (the same thing happened with Dancing Girl Nile ITEM #211167 and Rie Kawai ITEM #319503), so one of these days I guess I need to learn my lesson and not wait forever with Q-Six items! Fortunately, a week after her release date, Velvet showed up for sale on AmiAmi; I promptly ordered her and then her status immediately changed back to "out of stock". I guess someone must have cancelled a preorder, and they had exactly one sitting in stock...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551985998.jpeg

Velvet can also be cast off, but that's a harrowing experience! The material in her bikini has some give to it, but her arms cannot be removed (which is actually a good thing since that means no annoying rings/bands on her arms) and there's no way to "open" her top/bottom, so you have to remove her head and verrrrry carefully slip the bikini pieces down her torso and legs. On the instruction sheet, Q-Six even recommends taking a hairdryer to the figure to make this easier, although I was able to complete the process without resorting to such extreme measures. I'd never seen a manufacturer officially sanction that treatment before!

Velvet is also a vampire, which connects her to the next figure in this loot, since Kobato Hasegawa ITEM #98882 likes to pretend that she is an immortal vampire :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551986060.jpeg

Kobato and Sena ENTRY #6486 are my two favorite characters from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and my collection was lacking a proper scaled figure of Kobato, so when several of these appeared on AmiAmi, I figured it was a good time to finally get one.

She's so cute! I like the translucent effect on her hair and I like how Max Factory chose to depict her in heterochromia mode, as that really draws attention to her pretty face. Kobato is not naturally heterochromatic; rather, she wears a red contact lens when she's cosplaying as the vampire Reisys VI Felicity Sumeragi and this detail is a nice nod to the source material.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1551986054.jpeg

Next, this loot contains 2x the catgirls with Embrace Japan's ITEM #113824. I've always liked the character designs from Neko no Wakusei ENTRY #29439, and this figure had been languishing on my wishlist.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090437.jpeg

This figure comes in several color variants, but since I am a fan of blonde characters, I wanted to get this particular variant (the so-called "Alice" version). I think the blue and white outfit along with her blonde hair makes the figure pop much more than the original ITEM #79037, but that's just a matter of personal preference, I guess...

This figure originally came with a bonus poster, but things happen and there's never any guarantee that a six year old figure will still be bundled with bonus items. Fortunately, the poster was rolled up and packed neatly inside the box (18+ shot of the poster behind the spoiler tag).

View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090430.jpeg

This figure features a light bondage theme, and Neko-san can be tethered to the chair with these metal chains. The chains are secured with jewelry clasps, but several of them didn't want to open very well. Fortunately, a while back I bought a jewelry making kit that I used to mildly customize Q-Six's Rie Kawai ITEM #319503 (blog post: BLOG #39163); the kit contains hundreds of assorted links and clasps, and so I added some lobster clasps which made it much easier to get the figure set up properly.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090428.jpeg

I can't quite decide if the cat is intended to provide a little convenient censoring or if it's supposed to draw the eye even more :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090423.jpeg

This is by no means a perfect figure, but it might be my favorite item from this loot. Her blonde hair, kemonomimi features, and the bondage theme all check moe boxes, and I'd been on the lookout for this item for quite some time.

The final item in this month's loot is a figure of one of my very favorite characters, a new prize figure of the one and only Asuka ITEM #740199.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090658.jpeg

Although the yellow sundress is fairly iconic, being the outfit Asuka wore when she made her first appearance in the Evangelion anime, there aren't that many figures of Asuka wearing this dress. Therefore, this figure went on my wishlist as soon as it was teased, and I dutifully checked AmiAmi's preowned section each morning waiting for one to show up.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1552090649.jpeg

My first impression is that this is a pretty good quality figure for a prize, and it's always nice to find a new Asuka for my collection, particularly since there are not that many new Eva figures being made these days.

So, that's it for February's loot, and as always...

sailormatlacUta Kata & Popotan... Oh boy! let's talk about underrated and forgotten animes! Popotan was that anime I downloaded in my youth thinking it would be pure trash and fan service... only to be proven absolutely wrong by the following episodes. I was genuinely surprised by the way they handled a simple yet touching story. I still recommend the title in anime conventions when I do panels about forgotten series.
Glad to be one of the few to know both shows. Probably Uta-Kata is a little bit dated nowadays, but I suspect Popotan "the heart in the right place" vibe still works. One of my friend is a big fan of Uta-Kata and almost swear by it even to this day. He had more than one fight with Madoka fans!

If you can ignore the sometimes excessive fanservice (which was almost certainly there to draw in the fans of the VN that spawned the show), Popotan is really a very sad and heart-tugging show. The idea that existing outside of time is not all fun and games and that there are consequences to popping in and out of other peoples' lives makes for a much deeper and more interesting show than one might expect just at a glance. The fact that Poyoyon Rock did the attractive character designs makes the show even better.

When I found the Uta Kata CD, I revisited the episodes, and the show is somewhat dated, mainly because it was obviously done on a tight budget and the animation is somewhat limited. Madoka is a much better show in pretty much every respect (the animation is certainly better and the raison d'etre for the goings-on and the characters' motivations is better developed in Madoka) but all the same Uta Kata is an interesting show in its own right.

Probably the reason that Uta Kata was never too popular is that people who liked the dark overtones of the show might have been put off by the girly aspects of the show (like the Card Captor Sakura-esque "costume of the week" gimmick, which is actually rather interesting) and people who were looking for a fluffy magical girl anime might have turned away by the increasingly bleak tone of the show, and the rather nihilistic ending.

One of my friend is a big fan of Uta-Kata and almost swear by it even to this day. He had more than one fight with Madoka fans! Anyway, speaking of dark mahou shoujo, I recently watched Mahou no Mako-chan (1970) and discovered how dark that show was, even by today's standards. Inhibited hippies, provocative sexual innuendo, underage teens flirting in bars, black civil rights, youth suicide, delinquents, death, more death, animal death, more animal death, water lead poisoning, pollution, corruption, magic "that can't do nothing" against the ills of society, Vietnam war, student rebellions, anti-conformism and bullying. Feels like a crossover between Oniisama e, a modern dark mahou shoujo and a edgy late-90s early 2000s anime. Great stuff for the era given the technical limitations and episodic plotline. If this anime was redone with a continuous plot line and better production values, it would be an instant classic.

That's what I like about revisiting animes from the late 60s and early 70s. They are unsophisticated in appearance (thought many show some genuine artistic sensibilities), but so bold in themes and characters. It really changes one's viewpoint and makes me admire creators and TV executives that had the guts to go forward against PTAs and censorship. The funny thing is I can guarantee you I was less than impressed when I went back to watch current animes from this season.. it all felt washed out, bland and lifeless! ;-)

Anyway, Mako is the epitome of 60s cuteness, she's to die for. It would be so great to see a line of PVC figures based on old school Toei majokko. Mako-chan and Megu-chan would be terrific! (CM did a Megu-chan many years ago, but I'm not a fan of posable figures ITEM #41751) The funny thing is they could make castoff version of them and it would be PERFECTLY in character!

FenebrysExactly what I experienced after seeing some pictures of her here on MFC. She's even the reason why I started Akeiro Kaikitan, tbh. Luckily I still found her somewhere. But I'm already scared about casting her off ^^'
Nice loot btw!

Casting off the figure is not too difficult, it's just that a high level of care is needed. The bikini parts are a little bit stretchy, but I was careful not to force the matter too much.

I found the easiest way to cast off her top was to remove her head, move the top up her body, get the neck strap around the peg attaching her head, and then slip the bikini gently down her torso. Slow and steady...

damedanbo (1 maand(en) geleden) #53890461Sooooo jealous of that Q-six Velvet! I didn't notice she existed until she was sold out everywhere.
Fortunately she's still available on kujumi.de. Didn't know about this shop until my desperate search for Velvet myself. So I've got no real experience with them yet. It seems, like it will take a while until she's shipped, but they seem to be pretty trustworthy :)
The shop's all in german and shipping overseas won't come cheap, though :/

Velvet is a very neat figure. The way her hair hangs in her face is a very neat look, and of course the maid/microkini combination is an interesting one. I guess that Q-Six, as a smaller company, must be pretty tight with their production runs, as you don't often see their figures new post-release.

A fair number of people on MFC appear to have ordered Velvet, so maybe she won't be too tough to find on the secondhand market.
