Hello MFC!
Today I present to you a review of the chilling Antarcticite, which is a non-scale figure manufactured by Goodsmile Company from the Houseki No Kuni series. Antarc is the second figure to come from GSC in the HnK line of figures and takes a rather interesting departure from Phos in terms of style and design. At first this concerned me as I was worried the two figures wouldn’t go well togerther. But, I hope by the end of this review I can calm any similar doubts in your mind cause this figure is an absolute work of art in its all pure form.

Before we begin, If you would like to check out my review of Phosphophyllite, you can do so here:
BLOG #42080

Just to clarify, for the sake of this review I will be referring to Antarc as a “he”, I am well aware the gems themselves have no actual gender and that they are referred to with gender neutral pronouns…but for simplicity sake I will be using he and him when referring to Antarc throughout this review.

With that out the way, lets grab our weapon, smash up some ice floes and check out the review!

[WARNING - THIS IS AN IMAGE HEAVY REVIEW AND CONTAINS SPOILERS]

________________ BOX ________________

Let’s begin by taking a look at the box. The biggest difference between this figure and the previous HnK figure released by GSC is that Antarc is “non-scale”, meaning she doesn’t fit into a set scaling system like 1/8 or 1/6 for example. This not only allows some creative freedom when creating the figure but also makes two figures as part of a set look rather different when displayed together. I personally love displaying figures as sets so this was one concern I had when seeing the first initial photos of Antarc. But, that being said the box for Antarc without a doubt makes a statement that not he and Phos are part of the same set but share very similar box design traits.

Antarc comes in a small compact box featuring crystal clear plastic and almost every side. This not only gives great access from the viewer when checking out the figure but also helps to instantly capture the atmosphere of the series and character. Printed on the back and the sides is a slight clear triangle pattern replicating a crystal like structure, while the front features the series logo and figure name.

The back features a solid graphic showing some full scale photos of the figure from different angles. I absolutely love this small and compact box and the graphic design really helps replicate that frosted icy crystal feel. It’s stunning!

________________ BLISTER ________________

Once you have opened up the box you will find the blister inside. Inside the Blister there are 2 main components:
1. Antarc, the main figure with Base
2. Small Ice shard

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326390.png

________________INSTRUCTIONS ________________

Also inside the box you will find a set of instructions, thankfully the figure itself already comes attached to the base, the only thing we need to do is attach the small “L” shaped crystal part onto the figure and then he will be ready to go!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326470.png

________________THE CONSTRUCTION ________________

The construction process is incredibly simple, On the shorter side of the “L” shaped crystal piece you will find a small peg. This peg connects into a tiny socket located what is left of Antarc’s right leg. Carefully connect the peg into the socket and the figure is complete! Simple!

This being said (which will become apparent in the next section) the fact that this is the ONLY means of construction in this figure at all is a miracle. There are so many risky connections that I am surprised this is the only piece which is separate. That being said I have heard of some reports of some figures arriving with other broken/snapped off parts. If there are any other parts loose in the blister other than this “L” shaped piece, then be sure to contact GSC for a replacement.

________________ANTARC – THE COMPLETED FIGURE ________________

After a very simple construction process, here is the completed figure of Antarc in all his glory. There is A LOT to cover here so before we go on let me quickly explain what’s going on in this figure. This figure is based on a very tragic and horrible moment in the series, one that I am surprised they decided to cover as its incredibly sad and horrible to watch – yet at the same time GSC have done an incredible job of not only capturing his beauty but also the moment of complacency/peace of Antarc’s final moments. This moment captures the characters death, as Phos undergoes a new transformation as liquid gold consumes her, Phos is encased in a giant Gold cube while the gold goes through a synchronization process with Phos’s body. The gold cube is represented as the “base” for this figure.

Antarc is standing outside the cube trying to protect Phos from the Sunspot invasion. Unfortunately Antarc cannot hold them off and is shattered to death. All Phos can do is watch helplessly trapped inside the cube through some small steel bars as she watches her friend shatter into pieces. In Antarc’s final moments, he puts his finger to his lips, indicating for Phos to remain silent during his death, as the moon invaders have no idea Phos is hiding inside and Antarc does not want her to be taken away as he is about to.

It’s a horrible and heart breaking moment in the series and acts as the absolute turning point for the main character. It’s really special to have such a defining moment of the series captured in figure form but at the same time it’s honestly rather brutal…

The more we explore this figure you will soon realize how much work has gone into creating this. Every angle tells a story and holds some sort of importance. This side I think does the best job of capturing what Phos would see inside the cube. While even though the level of damage is quite apparent (especially with the massive graze along his hip) Antarc still looks somewhat intact and decent from this angle.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326480.png

From this angle we can get a good look at the lovely shaping and sculpting of his body, from here the waistline/back looks very realistic, I also love the way his uniform hugs his body so tightly – helps create some really nice folds and shadows in the uniform.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326482.png

Here we have the opposite angle from before, this side represents absolute horror in its more pure form. This angle really shows off the amount of damage that Antarc sustained from the attack. There is so much going on here and is the core focus of the figure in my opinion.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326485.png

And finally a shot from the front which also does a great job in showcasing the frame/body pose of Antarc, so graceful even in the eyes of fear and eternal slumber…

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326487.png

After having a look at the turn around, let’s dive in and take a closer look at all the amazing details that make this figure what it is, starting with the head. Honestly, the sculpting and detailing on the face is perfect and unlike anything I have seen. The other HnK figure, Phos, captured the art and style of the Manga while Antarc seems to take on the characters design that’s closer to the anime and looks far more mature then the stylised art of the Manga. This realistic style really suits not only the character but the nature and seriousness of the figure as well. Look at how real his lips look as well as his nose! That’s some amazing sculpting work right there.

The decal used for the eye has such nice shaping to it and the slight blue highlights contrast so well with the monotone colour scheme of the rest of the figure. The expression really brings this whole figure together, Antarc not only expresses this moment of fear and horror, but also a sense of peace and serenity, it’s truly something special.

The next thing we have to discuss is Antarc’s hair, which is absolutely amazing. One design element I thought always stood out with Antarc was how his hair was made up of thin strands of crystals, while almost all the other characters in the series have large clumps/shapes of crystals that make up their hair. This design element is represented perfectly here, not to mention the unique crystal like material used to represent what Antarc is made up of. It has this slight transparent nature, shines and radiates from different angles and just looks incredible. I love the way the hair flows so naturally over his other eye…speaking of which…

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326631.png

Here we have it, the most horrifying and saddest angle of the figure. From the previous side he still looks together and somewhat salvageable…from this angle it is nightmare fuel which haunts Phos’s memories forever. The more you look at it the more impressive it becomes, how the head is still connected to the body is beyond me, the connection between the neck and the body is so super thin it looks like the head is practically floating in place, it’s amazing.

The craziest part on this figure though is the eye, the actual right side of his face has been ripped off and you can see his eye ball falling out – that’s just insane. Being able to see inside the characters crystal head would have been so hard to capture and it’s an amazing effect. You can also see in this shot how lovely the sculpting work is in the hair and how the sides/tips have this pinkish shine to it in the light – beautiful.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326633.png

From here we can get a good look at the massive chunk that has been ripped off from his shoulder/chest. This section here gives a really good insight into the crystal like body that Antarc has. The shards look like actual cold shards of ice and have this shiny marble like texture that almost makes it look like the ice has water inside, it’s amazing. It also holds the same pearly shiny colours that the hair does as well. Another element I love about this section is how amazing the sculpting work is on the clothes being ripped. It truly looks like something has sliced open his clothes and has torn apart, all the fraying/rips in the fabric flow in such a beautiful way, it’s very impressive.

I also forgot to mention how great the glove is. Not only is in practically hanging on for dear life by the wrist but that texturing and paint work make it stand out so much from the white uniform. Look at those folds and creases where the fingers bend, amazing!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326636.png

Moving on down we get a look at my second favourite part of the figure, the massive graze along the side of his hip. The amount of detailing gone into this part is just above and beyond. You can see every layer of the figure here, the ripped fabric, the shards of skin and then the crystal structure underneath. The way the parts of skin are scattered here and then in chunks is just crazy to look at, not to mention again how amazing the sculpting work is on the clothes to create that ripped/torn effect.

I think the crystal like material looks/shines the brightest here, the pearly colour just reminds me of how badly I want more figures from the series…imagine how amazing Dia would look!??

Another quick piece of detail I like is the belt, for an already tiny figure the tiny paint work done on the belt and little straps are perfect, real nice work here.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326639.png

Moving on down we get to look at the legs. GSC have done such a great job of distinguishing the clothing sections from the skin and crystal, the way the bottom of the shorts fold inwards really makes it look like the legs continue up inside the clothes rather than them being two separate parts. Unfortunately Antarc loses both his legs in the attack, one being completely split down the middle as well. Its truly amazing how this figure is held togerther, there are so many “floating” parts it’s hard to tell how it all connect!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326641.png

One part I forgot to cover was the base – using the Gold cube was a really interesting design choice as “technically” Antarc would be standing in front of the cube not really on top of it. But honestly everything about this works so well. The gold paint on the base has this glitter like effect to it and stands out immensely against the cool white of Antarc. This particular angle of the base is my favourite as it has this abstract inner shaping that is highly effective. The base is simple but with the inner workings and amazing paint work it makes something minimalistic look very effective. I think anything else would of taken away from the figure and I think anything more would of taken away focus from the figure as well so overall I am very happy with the choice despite its minor story inaccuracy – it’s all for the sake of art and aesthetic!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326647.png

And finally we will finish up by taking a look at the back of Antarc. This is what I mean by every single angle on this figure has some sort of unique element going on. From the back not only can we appreciate the fine shaping and sculpting gone into Antarcs body but we also get to see this massive shard of crystal that is poking out of his back. The first thing I think of here is that it is his Shoulder blade…which is a horrifying thought. But the sculpting work here is seriously impressive, look at the way the clothes wrap around the shard as it pultrudes out of his back! It looks very painful to be honest…

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326644.png

________________CONCLUSION ________________

This figure has a lot going for it – despites its small size there are so many intricate details scattered throughout the figure that makes it really stand out. Starting with the box you can tell the amount of respect and care has gone into its design. I love the clear box design with the slight crystal like graphic printed across it, it immediately sets the tone and atmosphere for the figure inside.

Antarc himself is just a pure work of art. All the way from his design, pose, sculpting and paint work is an absolute marvel to look at. They were able to capture not only a tragic scene, but also the emotional impact it has on the character and the viewer also! I love the realistic/mature approach to the visual design on the figure, with beautifully sculpted lips and nose. The eye decal is stunning and the blue highlights contrasts so well against the rest of the figure. The crystal like material used for the hair and the shattered body parts are by far the biggest highlights to the figure. Depending on the angle it shines and changes colour, while some thicker elements on the body even look like the ice has bits of water encased inside – incredible.

The sculpting work on the figure is phenomenal, I love the way the clothes are torn and ripped open, and even how all the creases and folds are represented in the tightly fitted uniform. The detailing and paint work on the uniform is great, including the small belt, the tie and even the stitching work on the glove. The glittering gold paint work on the base is a stand out and adds so much to the figure without taking away from the main feature. The pose and shattered design and daring and is a marvel to look at, especially parts like the neck, hand and the floating eye ball! To me this figure is flawless and something truly unique and special unlike anything I have seen. If you are a fan of the series or even just interested in excellently designed/sculpted figures that this is surly to impress!
I can only hope this paves the way for at least 1 more figure…but with the recent WF not even showing the previously announced Phos Figma…my hopes are starting to melt away.

________________COLLECTION ________________

Just before we wrap up let’s take a quick look at how the two Houseki no kuni figures look together! Despite their size difference, I actually think they look fantastic together. While they aren’t really designed as a “set” per say, the two complement each other really well. Phos’s darker uniform is the complete opposite on Antarc’s uniform and creates this really nice colour balance between the two.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Celestrial1551326820.png

The two figures couldn’t be further from each other in terms of style and posing but honestly I adore them so much. The crystal material is just gorgeous and radiates from them both making them really stand out on a shelf. If anything Antarc’s pure white colour scheme is highlighted alongside Phos’s bright green and darker uniform. They make for a great combo of figures! What do you think??

Yes, exactly! I didn't know how to put it into words but this precisely what threw me off. I agree, the yellow cube makes the better design choice over the snow.

Thank you my friend!! Hopefully I'll have him soon. It's already March. :(

I don't have mine yet but I didn't even notice his eye floating above his face until you described it in your review! My heart!! Poor lil Antarc. That's amazing to see on the figure. And that neck! It's so thin! Barely hanging on! Blown away!
I'm plenty oblivious so I also didn't even realize what his base was until reading your explanation of the golden cube. Smh! I feel like such a fool! For the longest time I was so confused over it. I think I was thrown off all this time because it's slightly inaccurate to the story as you mentioned. But wow! Knowing this now makes me enjoy figure all the more.
As always, your reviews are as insightful as ever. Thanks for sharing! You helped me see new details about this figure I hadn't noticed before! Great pics and writing! Looking forward to the next!

Hello LadyLavellan!
Thanks for taking the time to read through it all!
I think the eye is the point where i was like " eesh this is so brutal ". I specifically remember the eye coming out in the anime but wouldn't think they would take it this far in the figure. The fringe does a pretty sneaky job of covering it up.

Haha dont beat yourself up too much over the base, its a pretty subtle reference to the scene and its not made overly obvious due to the fact its like the corner of the cube making it look more like an abstract pyramid? I think if they went with a white snow base to reflect the scenary it would of drowned out the monotone colours of Antarc so i think using the cube was rather clever!

Thanks again for your comments and i hope your pretty boi arrives soon!

Unfortunately, it'll be awhile yet (probably towards the end of March).
Can't complain with the massive discount that I got from TOM though. Just wish that Phosphophyllite was sold by TOM as well. Odd that they would sell one, and not the other!
