What do you think about unboxing videos? What do you think about unboxing videos?

Hello, everyone!!

So lately, the topic of unboxing videos has been on my mind a lot.

A lot of my friends have wanted me to do these kinds of videos because my reactions and facial expressions are (apparently) entertaining and fun to watch, especially when it comes to things I really like. I always brushed off the idea before, but now I'm starting to actually consider it.

I'm hoping to purchase an Amiami grab box and doing one of those haul blogs, but one of my friends is stubbornly insisting I do a video for the above reason. "The element of surprise + a fun reaction is what makes a video fun to watch!", she said.

I have experience making videos and the like, so I was thinking if I did do videos, that there will be editing, close up shots, and some fun little things sprinkled in. I've never done an unboxing kind of video before, though (unless you count small videos on snapchat lol).

I think it would be fun myself- to unbox, film, and edit and everything! Especially for grab boxes and loot boxes like LootAnime, but I wasn't sure if it would be something people would watch?
I don't really care about getting subscribers through this or becoming "popular" and "famous"- I just think it would be something fun to do. But even so, I don't really see a point in spending a lot of time making them and posting them online if no one would be interested at all.

So I want to ask- what do YOU think about unboxing videos?

What are some things you like and dislike about videos?

Do you prefer hands and item only videos, or ones that include the reviewer's face?

What kind of time frame do you prefer for videos? The longer videos or the shorter videos?

If it was a video regarding a surprise box or grab box, would you prefer a simple "this is what i got and i thought this and that, go buy it yourself" kind of video or a more !!! "bRUH This is what I got! I am -.- @ some items and :DDDDD @ some items"? Or maybe something inbetween? (Balance is important, I gotta say!)

How much do you think a reaction can go until it goes "too far" or over the top?

Those are just the questions that came to mind just now, but if I have anymore I'll edit it up here!

I'm sure everyone has their own thoughts and opinions, but I wanted to know what members of the community feel. Please feel free to leave your thoughts on other things you think are important too in the comments!

Thanks so much for reading!

In all sincerity, I lump together unboxing videos and other "attention whoring" stuff like reactions or reviews, especially when it goes to long awaited trailers or anime episodes.

Most of the time it's so cringeworthy it should be forbidden. Like said in other comments, it never goes straight to the point and always beat around the bush, so when you could have a nice 5 min. vid, you end up with a boring 15 min. vid. Shame that's the mindset of most people on the web nowadays.

Hate them. I would much rather see photos that show what is in the set. The only time I ever click on an unboxing (besides a parody) is when I really want to know what exactly comes in a set, and nowhere online has photos.
It takes scrolling 10 minutes in to even get past the actual box. I don't want to see a cardboard box from every angle, and then it cut open as if there is some kind of suspense there. And then they just ramble about how much they wanted it or how cute it is, and zoom in for blurry shots or wave it around erratically. "Look at the print!" *wave wave*
Here's what I want in an unboxing video. I don't care about the people. I don't want to see the box. There is no suspense. I just want to see the product, and then I want to see everything inside, maybe front and back if necessary. The end.

I never watched anime figure unboxing vids but I do look videos for statues like Sideshow or 4F4. I am mostly interested in the size and the overall quality. I have no problem seeing the one doing the unboxing. I even quite like it ^^.

I like them. I think it's nice to see the figure from different angles, it's actual size, how well it's packed, and if there are some things the person likes or dislikes about a figure. Also I think it's adorable when people are obviously really excited about what they got. Some people seem to just buy and review whatever to make videos and don't even know the characters. That always seems a little sad.

To be honest, I don't often watch box openings for anime figures, because I mostly use them when I decide whether or not to buy something (or when I'm excited and waiting for something), and as anime figures I buy are mostly pre-orders, where unboxings only show up around the time I would be getting it anyway, I don't feel the need.

But I think there are enough people out there who just collect casually and don't pre-order, so I think there is definitely always an audience, and if you think it would be fun, why not do it :)

I find them pretty annoying. I'd rather just see still images of the product instead of someone waving it around in front of a camera where I can't look at one spot for more than a few seconds at a time. And if you don't have a good camera and proper lighting it can make the product you're unboxing look bad. Even the few "professional" unboxing videos I've watched from major companies (mostly for video game limited editions) I skip through the talking and pause it on the scenes I want to see, basically defeating the purpose of the video.

I don't like watching videos just in general, especially not the ones where I'd have to turn my sound on or have to pause something else I'm doing just so I can listen to it. Unboxing videos never really made any sense to me. I tend to like seeing pictures, maybe with a bit of a review with it but not with a lot of information. From there I can make up my mind as to if I want something or not.

Phil_Liz"For example, when I want to know how big something is. I think the best way to get a feeling of how big e.g. a figure (or it's box) is, is to watch a video where a person is next to it or holds it. Sometimes I also watch unboxing videos if I have to put a figure back in it's box and can't remember where the parts belong lol"

^ I couldn't agree more.

I prefer reading the loot posts here versus videos. I'll read 'em even if I don't know the series they got a majority of their items from. It's still interesting and I get pleasure seeing people open "presents". Everything nicely displayed in a group shot.

I don't really like them, as many others I prefer written reviews with pictures but I do watch them from time to time. For example, when I want to know how big something is. I think the best way to get a feeling of how big e.g. a figure (or it's box) is, is to watch a video where a person is next to it or holds it. Sometimes I also watch unboxing videos if I have to put a figure back in it's box and can't remember where the parts belong lol

Regarding the question about the reaction:
As others stated: it has to be natural, simple as that. There's nothing more awkward then someone who tries too hard to be funny.

What are some things you like and dislike about videos?
I like unboxing videos because there's a nice perspective of the figure, you see the detailed figure from almost every angle, and the person who makes the unboxing, describes evgery accessory and part of the figure, like you almost feel the same excitement as the person making the video, when I want or order a figure I search for unboxing videos and reviews to see what i'm gonna get
Do you prefer hands and item only videos, or ones that include the reviewer's face?
I think that is a nice way to get faithful viewers if you show yourself instead of only showing the box and your hands, some people don't feel so confident about it but it's a good way to get followers
What kind of time frame do you prefer for videos? The longer videos or the shorter videos?
I think a 5 to 10 minutes video is fine, longer videos sometines are boring and you stop watching them at some point.
Fourth question XD
I think that the more excited you show yourself up, the funnier and better, but not overacting obviously. your viewers will feel that vibe and if they're interested in the product you've got, it would encourage them to get it.

Very good points,I gaining a little more confident showing myself on the videos and not just my hand and the box xD

I still new so I like to experiment with an angle I know the viewers can see get a perfect view for both figure/box.

I stop my camera and position how I want the figure to look up close to show details and try my best to explain it. I don't go overboard but try to give as much info as I can.
