Shiro 1/7 (Kotobukiya) ReviewShiro 1/7 (Kotobukiya) Review

SuperstickmanSuperstickman4 jaar geledenReview
Hello and welcome to another review! Today we’ll be looking at one of the most popular and most highly anticipated figures on MFC, so popular in fact, that it made the front page. It’s a figure that frequently went out of stock while pre-orders were open and, at one point was the (I think) 3rd most ordered figure on the site. The figure I’m talking about is Kotobukiya’s Shiro, from the hit 2014 anime: No Game No Life.

While watching No Game No Life, I wondered to myself: “Wow, this is a really interesting art style. I wonder how all these colours and character designs would translate into figures”. When the prototype was first released my reaction was mixed. There were some aspects of the figure, I liked, and others I didn’t care for. However, as the months passed, I started to warm to this figure more and more. And now that I own the figure, I’m glad I got her, because she is absolutely stunning, despite numerous flaws.

Where do you even start with this figure? I guess we should get the box out of the way. The box is good, however there’s not really anything to make it stand out. The colour scheme, the font of the text and the general aesthetics match that of the show, and inside the box you can see a picture of Sora. It only makes me want a Sora figure even more, but let’s not get off topic. The box and the packaging are nothing to write home about but they do their job nicely, which is all I ask for. It’s worth mentioning that the box is not overly big, which is always a plus, in my opinion.

The Chess piece outline is a nice touch.

The base is a circular chessboard and it compliments the figure really well. Not just because it thematically fits with the show, but the glossy finish around and on the board adds an additional level of polish to an already stylish figure.

The figure comes with two tiny chess pieces. 1 you can sit on the board where you please, and the other goes in one of Shiro’s hands. When I mean, tiny, I mean REALLY tiny, so be cautious not to lose them.

Shiro’s pose is somewhat interesting as she is sitting or rocking on a chessboard, which appears to be falling over. It’s an interesting, and somewhat dynamic pose, which I initially found distracting, but now I’ve come around to.

Shiro’s hair is certainly one of the most interesting aspects of this figure. It’s lavish, colorful, beautiful and a sight to behold.

As you go along each strand of hair it slowly changes colour and becomes more and more transparent.

Personally, I like this, however, some may prefer the hair to have solid colours all throughout her hair.

On the top of her head I noticed a big problem with the seam of her hair. It looks, almost like it’s cracked with a very shoddy and rough paint job.

Unlike the transparency of her hair, this is undeniably a flaw, however, I must note that it is nowhere near as noticeable or bad looking in person as it is in the photos.

The paint job is a mixed bag. I adore the paint job on Shiro’s skin; especially the facial expression (which I initially wasn’t sold on in the prototypes) and I think it’s a real highlight, and a strong aspect of the figure.

In my opinion, the paint job on her crown is decent, but not amazing. It's a little rough around the edges. And the hair…well, I’ve gone over that.

http://i60.tinypic.com/2qb7nz6.jpg

In keeping with the ecchi characteristics of the anime, the sleeve of Shiro’s uniform has fallen, revealing her shoulder.

http://i62.tinypic.com/1zz6c7o.jpg

Pantsu can either be hidden or easily visible depending on what angle she’s sitting at. I really appreciate this as it caters to both fans of ecchi figures, and those who don’t want, or can’t have figures that have too much fanservice.

If the little bit of pantsu isn’t enough though, she is a cast off figure so you can completely remove her skirt. I found this option surprising and unexpected, but it’s nice that Kotobukiya decided to include it.

If you’ve read my Frau Koujiro figure review, you’ll know that I love a loose sock and Shiro has a lovely purple (or blue?) sock, which looks to be gently touching the board, but in actuality it has a peg on the bottom and goes into the groove on the board. Like Frau, this is a figure for you zettai ryouiki fans out there.

There’s no doubt this is an ambitious figure and while there are numerous flaws, I do believe that none of them are deal breakers. As a whole, this figure is so beautiful that you hardly notice them anyway. Trust me when I say that this figure is a lot more beautiful in person.

You may be asking: "Should I buy this figure?" Honestly, that is a hard question to answer. If you are a perfectionist, it's hard to recommend due to its imperfections, however, if you don't expect perfection, or you find this figure cheap and you like the colours and style, then I would say go for it. Don't get me wrong, this is far from a bad figure, and I'm very happy to own her, it's just that she has a few flaws.

At the very least, one thing you can say for certain about this figure is that she is bound to stand out in any collection.

The problem here is that this was a $100+ figure. It doesn't matter which company puts out the figure, for that much they should have pushed back the release date and ironed out the very obvious and many QC issues that Shiro has. I've personally also completely lost patience with companies showing one thing in their pre-release photos and then delivering another thing in their actual product (the hair in this case).

Are we as a hobby community slowly loosing perspective on how much money we're paying for figures vs. what their quality is actually worth? People should be angry with Kotobukiya. And people absolutely should be comparing them with companies who put out better quality products for the same price. This is what business competition is all about.

Thank you for the review Superstickman. I'm relieved that I decided to give my PO on this one away, despite how much I initially really wanted her. Most of the issues may not have been a deal breaker for me, but the surprise hair transparency definitely was (the one figure trend I just can't get behind).

Moro (4 jaar geleden) #2439349You're clearly not seeing the comments I am. Nearly EVERY TIME Koto is brought up, the cult of GSC/Max Factory is there to call it second-rate/subpar/shitty. They're the worst about it by far. Cult of Alter isn't much better but nowadays they're piling on OMG RUINED on Alter figures too :/

Brand loyalty and brand hate is an interesting thing, isn't it? It can be out of control XD

Poyanyo (4 jaar geleden) #2439341I honestly don't think that there's a lot of Koto hate going around. In fact, I've seen more people argue that Koto is a good company! Of course, this is completely anecdotal. :p I think this figure just got too hyped, and prototype looked perfect. Then, the final product came, and Koto messed up a bit. Still an overall nice figure, and I'm sure a lot of people had a knee-jerk reaction to it (myself included).
On another note, I loved the review! I always enjoy reading these on MFC, even if they're of figures I probably won't buy. C:

Thanks you very much for the kind words. I think you're exactly right. This figure was hyped a ridiculous amount, and like anything that's hyped, when there's a problem, people will naturally have a, as you put it, knee-jerk reaction. It's still a very pretty figure though. As for the Koto hate, yeah, there are people like me who will, for the most part, defend them and there's maybe slightly less hate than there was, but after this, that hate may increase again :/ Either way, i'm still going to buy their figures.

You make some good points, and i do agree with you. I don't regret my purchase but this figure really isn't worth the full price. I do think Koto should have pushed the figure back a bit to work on the flaws. Regardless, thanks for the kind words.

Moro (4 jaar geleden) #2439103I have lots of Koto figures and I've been pretty happy with all of them but of course that doesn't mean they don't make mistakes. It seems they had some issues with this figure that they just couldn't get ironed out. My older Koto figures are pretty rough around the edges as well. But like you said, Koto gets a lot of undeserved hate, I think maybe because people expect perfection when no company can deliver perfection.

My thoughts exactly. You hit the nail on the head :)
