iGetting Addicted to Sellingn/a    Uitgelichte artikels (2017-06-19)

So, after putting off selling some of my collection for nearly half a year, I finally bit the bullet a couple months ago and listed some items on eBay. Some of them sold for less than I had hoped, but the others? I actually made some profit. It's really gratifying in more than one way:

    1. I'm making money! It's nice to have money! Yay!
    2. I can funnel that money right back into pre-orders without having to think about future paychecks. This also removes some buyers guilt!
    3. I'm getting rid of clutter/making way for new items!

Between all these factors, it's really hard not to look around my space through a selling lens; I ask myself, "how much could I get for this?" or, "maybe I should look into how much this is going for." And while there's plenty of items I would never consider selling, there are many others where I'm staring at them with dollar signs in my eyes. This is really, really good for me!

After collecting various things for over ten years, I've accumulated a lot of stuff. I had a hard time letting things go because I attached some kind of sentimentality to what I had. It's certainly not an unusual thing among collectors, but I felt pretty anxious about letting something go when I wasn't completely 100% sure about getting rid of it. My recent bout of selling has been helping with this feeling. Receiving the payments for my stuff is almost like a reward for going through with the ordeal and it's helping me not place so much importance/feelings on material possessions. It's also encouraged me to pack up less valuable items and just send them off to Goodwill.

Slowly, but surely, I'm getting rid of stuff while actually enjoying it and getting paid for it!

I wish I felt this way. Selling is so tedious. From listing to shipping out I hate all of it. The money and space gained is nice but other than that... I wish someone could do it for me lol

To elaborate on how much I hate it, I have to stop myself from just throwing things in the trash

gemelli (3 dag(en) geleden) #22359126I totally get what you mean. Even after multiple purges I keep looking at my collection and wondering if there are any more I could sell. It's not so much the money (as I rarely sell anything with profit), but it's nice to have extra space. I consider it a good sale if I can make most of the money back or break even. Having more space is definitely an important aspect of it, and profit is just an added bonus. :)
nammy (3 dag(en) geleden) #22370489I would love to be addicted to selling, as it implies I'd actually sell stuff. Canada shipping costs too much, so idk why I even try lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't drive either, so I can't attend events, and the one I did was a huge loss and waste of time. I'd fucking garage sale it, if I didn't live in an apartment lol... Sorry to hear that. I know shipping into/out of Canada can be higher, but is it also a lot domestically? If that is the case, I can see why selling would be difficult. :/
katsudon (3 dag(en) geleden) #22395393Isn't selling stuff great? Not only is the extra money nice, but there's also something cathartic about doing so. It certainly is! Letting go of stuff and getting paid for it is a great feeling and, of all the things I've sold so far, I don't miss any of it.

MyNameIsSergio (4 dag(en) geleden) #22335126Im addicted to buying good thing i have a steady job that fills my addictionThat was me for the longest time until my shelves started getting crowded. I'm sure if I had the space, I wouldn't be as keen on selling as I currently am.
StarFruit (4 dag(en) geleden) #22347219I totally understand you. I am a collector who constantly tries to down-size my collection because I really don't like clutter(plus to save space for more stuff in the future), so I get money back from the sales and then I would be able to pre-order new stuff that I want = I feel happy! :D
And of course, we would have the things that we'll never want to sell---But I am also surprised that I am still able to find things that I'm willing to sell in my collection.
It's such a great feeling! I'm sure I'll feel pretty similar once I get down to the "core" collection. Hopefully I'll have enough practice letting things go by then it will be a little easier, but part of me doubts it, lol. Chloe-tsundere (3 dag(en) geleden) #22359117Yeah i sometimes feel the same like what if i buy a 2nd one and sell it with profit so i can buy something new? Tho i usually end up not buying extras. Or if i damage one i sell it and buy a new one undamaged ^^
I also enjoy selling figures after a while that i lost interest in after some years but well taken care of and enjoy seeing someone else happy with the figure :)
Tho i prefer selling locally over mfc cause many users just ask ask dont buy or if buy expect me to ship it as fast or even faster than a shop would.. open cases etc.
Never had those problems locally :) so i focus on there
I've always contemplated buying some stuff to hang onto and then sell later for a profit, but the figure aftermarket can be so fickle sometimes. Of all things, Legos seem pretty solid for maintaining and gaining value (at least unopened), so once I downsize enough I might start investing in those. When it comes to dolls/figures, I purely only buy for my own satisfaction, so they're almost always opened, displayed, and the box is tossed unless it's fragile and would need the box for future moving purposes. I figure I won't mind taking the hit selling it later on the off chance I don't want it later on.

I've thankfully had decent experiences buying and selling on MFC. I'm also pretty willing to bend over backwards to make people happy as long as they aren't rude about it and unreasonable. I lose patience very fast when buyers/sellers don't keep the golden rule in mind when dealing with others.

Mareem (4 dag(en) geleden) #22332433I can't bring myself to sell some of my collection, even if they're old or I don't have space for them anymore. Perhaps I'm too attached and can't say goodbye to them. That's what I had the most trouble with for so long. I tend to place a lot of sentimentality on the stuff I own, especially if they have faces like figures and dolls. Selling has been helping me get over it, but there's still a decent chunk of my collection where I don't think I could bear parting with it in part because it would be expensive/hard to get back if I changed my mind.
Raze (4 dag(en) geleden) #22332792I go through purges every few months and although it's a ton of work to sell and I usually don't break even, I'm just happy to find new homes for things. I really don't like the thought of trashing things, especially anime stuff that's hard to find. At first, I was clearing out extra items, but then I slowly started to go through my collections and I kept adding more and more to sell. Lots of things I thought I'd never let go I was ok with selling.
Eventually I hit the Truly Hard to Let Go Things. I took a long time figuring out if I really wanted to keep X item or if I was ok with selling, especially since I didn't really need to sell. People say it takes practice to let go of stuff easily, but it's still really hard for me to do!
On the funny side, I put all my sale photos in folders and it's interesting to look back and see all the stuff I've sold. It's a nice walk down memory lane.
Yeah, I like to think some of the items I send out are "happy" to go to new homes, haha. I'm of the same mind that I'd rather give something away or sell it cheap rather than toss it which is why I'm happy to pack some things up for Goodwill if I don't want to go through the time/trouble. I figure someone out there will be happy to have it.

My bf also gave me good advice when it came to being unsure about selling, like if you consider selling something more than 3 times, you should probably just bite the bullet and let it go. That's been helping me, too. Taking pictures is great because I think it helps with the process of letting it go. I still have a bunch of photos from selling my stuff, but it's mostly from me being too lazy to delete all the files, heh.
4catdoorman (4 dag(en) geleden) #22333615This is how I got started using ebay back in 2005. The original idea was to downsize and distribute any income toward debt but the reality became debt reduction plus intro affordability into PVC 2012 where I have become broke and poor ever since, lol. I've taken in low 6 figures USD since 2005 selling off items acquired from collecting since 1969. At times it seems magical; other times, sad to say, it's become quite the nightmare.

-snip-
I can definitely sympathize with you about these places placing a lot of responsibility on the sellers. Thankfully, I got my start into hobbies like this by jumping into the ball jointed doll community, where you must be extremely thorough when selling by taking plenty of pictures, describing the items condition (down to every last potential scratch and mark), and packing everything like it'd snap in half with the least amount of pressure. Very time consuming, but you have to be when most of these places side with buyers a lot of the time. After a package got lost internationally before reaching a buyer once, I don't do international sales anymore, heh.

rubyserpent_720 (4 dag(en) geleden) #22331343I like selling my figures because it gives me something do with this hobby during downtime. There's a plethora of new figures/series released that I want but due to space constraints I need to constantly sell off some of my older figures to make room and money for new ones so it's a never ending cycle.
Plus there's a certain satisfaction in packing and sending off parcels and getting nice reviews back :)
Yeah, the hobby has been pretty quiet for me and it does help fill the time. I'm hoping to consistently keep getting rid of things, though. Hopefully the upcoming Wonderfest doesn't give me too much to be excited about. ;-;
EnvyNeko (4 dag(en) geleden) #22331632I can definitely relate to this. I've gone through my collection several times wondering what I'm okay with parting with. I recently went through all of the posters I had stored (I had all my posters stored in four large frames) and I took out 80 some posters I didn't want anymore. I've sold quite a few already and the best part for me is that a lot of those were ones I got cheap or free so a very high profit margin. I end up using nearly all 50 free listings on eBay each month (though some of those are relistings of stuff that didn't sell before) and I've gotten a decent amount back that's gone straight to my current preorders.
Feels nice man.
Ooh, that's great! Nothing quite like mostly making a profit. I'm hoping to make enough to cover my current pre-orders, which shouldn't be too hard since I still have plenty of things to let go of.
Kirenisa (4 dag(en) geleden) #22332343I wouldn't mind selling but my main issue is the driving due to a lack of car so I have to figure stuff out when I need to sell something (arranging a ride and what not) That's unfortunate. If you're selling smaller stuff and printing labels at home through Paypal, I know you can leave packages in your mailbox and the postman will take them for you. I've done it a couple times and haven't had a problem.
