i30 Day Figure Challengen/a    Uitgelichte artikels (2017-04-21)

I've seen some people try themselves at caneton's 30 Day Figure Challenge so I though why not jump in the bandwagon and do mine?
I'm not on Instagram and so, better drop it all here in one go.

1. Your Gateway Figure
Konami Great Impact Gurren Lagann
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709530.jpeg

Not my first figure but one of my first imports and my first 3-digits figure (in euros, 5-digits in yens). Also this is when I learned about customs the hard way, good thing that the conversion rate was 160¥/€ back then in 2008.

2. Your most entry-level figure
Dix-Neuf gashapon
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709522.jpeg

Grabbed it in a local shop around the time when I started collecting. Shortly after that I discovered online shops and became snobbish. ^^
I stopped buying trading/prize figures to focus on scales, Figmas and plamos.

3. Most obscure figure
Pikari and Teko papercrafts
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709604.jpeg

These papercrafts were bundled with some volumes of Amanchu in Japan. The characters themselves aren't really obscure anymore since an anime version was made recently but according to MFC, these two are the least popular figures in my collection and I'm apparently the one and only user to own them at the time of writing. Don't know why these are categorized as "figures" though...
Other candidates (actual figures):
View spoilerHide spoilerFigma Conan
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709501.jpeg

From the Mirai Shounen Conan TV series of 1978, one of the lesser known works of Hayao Miyazaki and the archetype for what would later become Castle in the Sky.

Figma Kyoshinhei
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709575.jpeg

From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Most people know the God Warrior as the humongous weapon/monster at the end of the movie. However that movie only adapts two of the seven volumes of Hayao Miyazaki's manga. For the fewer people that have read the full story, the God Warrior is a key character later in the narrative (with speech and a personality). A character I liked enough to take my usernames after him for the last 15 years.

BerserCAR
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709505.jpeg

From the minigame Illya's Castle in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia.
A bit of trivia: this item was made by Nendoron and released at the 2006 Winter Wonder Festival alongside with the very first Nendoroids. The chibis included with BerserCAR can be seen as precursors of what would later become the Nendoroid Petit line.

4. An impulse buy
Good Smile Arms I-401
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709547.jpeg

When this went up for preorders on GSC's website, I had only marginally heard of the show but thought the design of the submarine looked cool and left it at that. Then about two years later I watched the show. Midway through episode 2 I paused the video, went online to find a shop selling it (with exclusive bonus), ordered it and went back to watching. Took me about 10 minutes.

5. Figure you spent the most on
Either Genei Elias & Chise
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709524.jpeg
or Eyeup Kamina

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709551.jpeg

If we consider Elias & Chise as a single item (while it is in fact a bundle of two) then it was my most expensive at around 290€ for figures+shipping+customs.
Otherwise it's Kamina that I got for 250€ shipped because of crazy aftermarket prices. It was probably the only Grail in my list for which I would agree to pay a price that differs so much from the original (about 3~4 times the release price)

6. Best deal you've gotten
Play Arts Zidane
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709682.jpeg

Got him for free after accumulating over 90€ worth of loyalty points at one of my manga stores.

7. Favourite poseable figure
Konami Great Impact Gurren Lagann
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709530.jpeg

Again. Being one of my fist collection items, it means that the best action figures I had known until I bought it were 90's Transformers figures. It made me realize the vast difference in quality and engineering between kids and collectors toys.

8. Favourite chibi figure
Nendoroid Neco-Arcs
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709598.jpeg

I usually prefer figures that stick to the original character designs so I've got almost no chibi/SD/Nendoroid figures. Among the few ones I own are the Neco-Arcs which fit my criteria because the characters are SD from the start. Don't look for Chaos, Bubbles and Destiny in the database, they are customs that I made myself.

9. Favourite Prize figure
Alter Type-Moon Collection
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709676.jpeg

As I said earlier, I'm not much into prize figures anymore but this particular collection from Alter is one of my favorites. The sculpt is on par with many scale figures and that's quite a feat considering that these were made in 2007. That set also has Saber and Tohsaka Rin but I found their quality a bit inferior so I passed on them.

10. First grail owned
Konami Great Impact Gurren Lagann
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709530.jpeg

Aaaaand... again ^^
That first Grail was my gateway figure.

11. Items or characters you have multiples of
Saber
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709635.jpeg

I usually prefer getting a wider array of characters rather than focusing on just one. Still I made an exception for the Saber (Artoria) figures by GSC because of how great they look. It is the most represented character in my collection with 3 scales (soon 4) and 1 SD so that's not a lot really.

12. Figure non-collectors would appreciate
Aniplex Madoka Magika Maiko/Haregi figures
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709577.jpeg

I've heard compliments on them from my mother and grandmother (who don't know anime further than Miyazaki). The bright and elegant kimono designs can appeal to anyone.

13. Figure you're ashamed to show your family
GSC Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709555.jpeg

I usually go for "cool" rather than "sexy" so I don't own any figure that I would be particularly ashamed to show. Frankly, I picked this figure only because I heard my mother say "Wow, she has huge boobs." once, but that wasn't even a critic...

14. Fixer-upper or a figure you've had to repair
Hdge Moritomo Nozomi
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709600.jpeg

I've fixed a number of figures so it's hard to pick one over another. In the end I'll go with Nozomi because it was quite a unique fix. Out of the box I thought her face looked uncanny but couldn't put my finger on why. After a few hours I realized it was because of a slight paint mistake at the corner of her mouth that made her expression feel completely different. I then spent another hour mixing paints until I got the exact color for her skin and fixed the mistake (good thing I'm a plamo builder and I've got all kinds of paint handy)
Other repairs I've had to do:
View spoilerHide spoilerFigure - Damage - Cause
item #41761 - middle bar of the desk - fell from a shelf
item #162017 - pinwheel attachment - put too much strength when assembling
item #3875 - effect part - broken out of the box
item #2084 - right fin/wing - broken out of the box
item #24921 - tip of the wings - fell from a shelf
item #117920 - Dark Repulsor Sword - put too much strength when assembling
item #153778 - left shoulder - fell from a shelf
item #864 - ahoge - fell from a shelf
item #98693 - "antenna" - fell from a shelf
item #858 - shirt (repaint) - acetone accident
item #206793 - torso joint - broken out of the box, GSC provided a replacement but I fixed the old one anyway for training ^^
item #4937 - ribbon on the sword - missing out of the box (bought another broken Cloud and swapped the swords)
item #2109 - right leg - leaning with time
After fixing, every figure is now as good as it originally was, if not stronger.

15. Item with an interesting story
Play Arts Vivi
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709680.jpeg

Two years ago I took this figure to have its base signed by Nobuo Uemastu at the Final Fantasy Piano Opera concert at the Bataclan in Paris.
Six days later, terrorists were attacking that concert hall.
Seeing this figure kinda reminds me that I (almost literally) dodged a bullet...
(sorry for the grim story)

16. Most nostalgic item
Predalien
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709631.jpeg

This one is not in the database, though I could probably add it since it's made by FuRyu so it should qualify. This figure feels nostalgic not because of the fond memories I have of Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (NOBODY has these!) but because it takes me back to my high school years and the all-nighter lanparties with my friends on Aliens vs Predator 2: Primal Hunt. Try to guess my main pick ^^

17. Most annoying item
Figma Tsugumori
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709674.jpeg

Weak joints can't hold the weight of the limbs, much less the cannon. I had to stiffen them all with nail polish.

18. Gaudiest/tackiest item
MG Musha Gundam and MG Musha Gundam Mk-II
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709573.jpeg

These two are probably the closest thing to "gaudy" that I have.
And I haven't even painted them yet.

19. Biggest figure
Either Alter Fate T. Harlaown Shin Sonic Form
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709528.jpeg
or Figma Vehicles Panzer IV
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709602.jpeg

Fate wins in length while the Panzer wins in volume.

20. Smallest figure
Venom Snake
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709678.jpeg

Granted, it's part of the much bigger Metal Gear Sahelanthropus model kit but still, at 1.8cm that's a pretty small figure (and a nightmare to paint)

21. Favourite figure received as a gift
HG Gundam Deathscythe Hell
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709503.jpeg

I haven't gotten many figures as gifts and I don't really prefer one over another so I picked the Deathscythe because that was one of the first figures (well, model kit) that I got as a present from a friend and incidentally the first time I painted a kit (don't judge me on it, I've improved a great deal since ^^;)

22. Favourite pair of figures to display together
Revoltech Krauser II with Figma Miku 2.0
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709579.jpeg

Do I even need to comment? ^^

23. Cutest figure
GSC Shinobu
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709627.jpeg

I'm not especially looking for "cute" in figures so this is the best I could think of.

24. Edgiest figure
Either GSC Black ★ Rock Shooter
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709499.jpeg
or Figma Insane Black ★ Rock Shooter
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709549.jpeg
or Play Arts Sephiroth and Cloud (Kingdom Hearts)

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709553.jpeg

Not really sure about the definition of "edgy" but if that means cool/dark design then I think these fit the bill.

25. Series you wish was complete
GSC Monogatari 1/8 Scales
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709581.jpeg

Incomplete because after all this time, GSC still shows no sign of wanting to make a scale figure of Araragi Koyomi (or Oshino Meme, or Kaiki Deishuu). I do not need more Shinobu, I need the dudes!

26. Completed series
GSC Monogatari 1/8 Scales
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709581.jpeg

Despite what I said before I'm still very proud to own all the Monogatari scales from GSC (except variants). It goes without saying that every new addition to the line is an instant pre-order for me.
I quite like to collect full sets so here are a few other contenders:
View spoilerHide spoiler
Nanoha Figmas
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709596.jpeg
SAO Figmas
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709629.jpeg
Excel Saga prize figures
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709526.jpeg
Neco-Arcs
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709598.jpeg
Aniplex Madoka Magika Maiko/Haregi figures
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709577.jpeg

27. Oldest item
Epic Force Collection Boba Fett
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709497.jpeg

This is Hasbro so it's not in MFC's database. This figure is from 1998, a time when I was not yet into anime. I started collecting figures 10 years later but as a kid, that was probably the first time that I had bought a toy that was solely for display and not to play with.

28. Most recent acquisition
Kotobukiya Red
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709633.jpeg

Got him last week. Runner-up for most nostalgic item after the Predalien. I still remember squeeing when I encountered this guy on top of the mountain in Pokemon Gold and realized that the strongest opponent in the game was myself from the previous game. As a kid that was a really fulfilling videogame moment.

29. Your display
My living (bed)room and my hall
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/kyoshinhei1492709828.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/kyoshinhei1492709832.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/kyoshinhei1492709830.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/kyoshinhei1492709834.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/kyoshinhei1492709826.jpeg

30. Favourite item(s)
So many but MFC got me covered!

That's all folks! Hope to see more of these challenges from other users!

kyoshinhei (2 maand(en) geleden) #20137847I'm not a native English speaker and I interpreted "entry-level" as "most basic"/"least elaborate" figure.
If that means "most accessible" figure to non-anime fans, then I'd say it's Red rather than Kirito. Even my mother can recognize a Pikachu while she has no idea what a "Kirito" is :-p

You're right! I forgot about Red/pikachu in there.

nyugvo6 (2 maand(en) geleden) #20136774Sick collection, it was a pleasure to scroll through it. However I'd argue that figma kirito is your most entry level figure. The show, character, and toyline are all widely known to those who aren't even into anime or toy collecting in general. Diebuster however is more obscure, and gashapon/trading figures are harder to come by. (voting insane black rock for edgiest)

13. Reminded me of my 1/4 Hestia figure. My mom commented on her having huge tits and start comparing her to barbie doll. I told my mom I bought this figure because it reminded me of her, which also have huge tits. That silenced her ;)

Thanks!

It's kind of interesting that your most unspeakable figure is item #98667 . In my collection, people wouldn't even bat an eye at that figure X-D .

Yeah quite different from your 30-Day Challenge ^^
Frankly I had to scratch my head to come up with even one figure for that category. :-p

Rajke (2 maand(en) geleden) #20096398I know that i will succeed but the question is when. ;)
Edit: Just curious; where did you place the custom base you made? I see the figure but i'm missing the base with the yellow pattern.

That base was made so the figure could fit inside the display case. Since I'm displaying her outside right now I've reverted to the original base (to match Nanoha's base).

I'm keeping the custom base in the drawers under the display cases where I'm storing all the accessories and alternate parts for my figures.

I passed the first practical exam (the avb (voertuig beheersing/ vehicle control)). At the moment i'm learning part two (avd (verkeers deelneming/ traffic control)).

Best of luck!
